Check the file in the recycle bin. The Recycle Bin will keep the file before it is permanently deleted, allowing you to restore the file if you change your mind. To do this, open the Recycle Bin, right-click the file and select Restore. The file will be restored to its original location on the hard drive.

  • Large files can be permanently deleted instead of moving to the Recycle Bin.

Immediately stop accessing the hard drive. If you can’t find the file in the Recycle Bin, don’t save or delete anything from your computer. Your chances of recovering files are higher if you don’t save anything new. In fact, a deleted file is set by the computer to overwrite other data. If no new data has been overwritten with the original file, you can restore it.

Download a data recovery program to your computer or other hard drive. Make sure not to save the file to the hard drive to be recovered, or you will overwrite the file to be recovered. Some of the popular free recovery programs:

  • recuva
  • Restoration
  • Glary Undelete
  • Puran File Recovery
  • Download a portable version of the recovery program if possible, so you can open the program directly from a USB drive without installation. Not all data recovery programs have portable versions. [1] X Research Source

Identify what you are looking for. Specify the drive containing the deleted file for the recovery program. You can recover files from USB this way. Access the file you want. Once you have the results, look in the list of files to recover. Each program has a different recovery method, but in general you need to select the file and click the Restore button.

  • Not every file is 100% recoverable. Because files are often stored in parts on the hard drive, some part may have been overwritten.
  • Some programs restore files to their original location, others restore to the Recovery folder.
