Steps

Make a sailor hat or an Alpine hat

Fold a rectangular piece of paper in half. Fold the paper in half lengthwise. Run your fingernail along the crease, then unfold the paper. You will use this fold for later steps. [1] X Research Source

  • A sheet of paper measuring 75x60cm is best, but you can use the printed paper to make a small hat for the doll.
Fold the paper in half widthwise. Line the two short sides together and flatten the paper (hamburger style). Run your fingernail along the crease to make it sharper. Do not open the paper. [2] X Research Source
Fold the two high corners into the center fold. Rotate the paper so that the folded edge is on top. Fold the left and right corners into the vertical fold in the center of the paper. In the end you will have the shape of the house. [3] X Research Sources
Fold 1 piece of paper along the bottom edge up. There are 2 paper “flaps” along the bottom edge of the house. Fold the top sheet of paper upside down. The new crease running along the bottom edge of the paper should be equal to the bottom edge of the triangle. [4] X Research Sources
Fold the brim inward if it is too wide. Open the brim to reveal the crease. Fold the bottom edge up to this crease, then fold the brim upside down, just like the step above. [5] X Research Sources

  • How wide you want the brim to be is up to you and your personal preference. Most people like the brim to be about 2.5-5cm wide.
Flip the paper over and fold the second rim up. If you folded the brim of the first hat twice, fold the brim of the second hat twice as well. [6] X Research Sources
Glue the corners of the brim if desired. You don’t need to do this step, but gluing the corners will make the hat look better. Apply masking tape to both edges of the brim to hold them in place. You can also use glue but wait for the glue to dry. [7] X Research Sources

  • To make the Alpine hat, you will fold the corners of the brim inside the paper so that the hat is triangular, then glue the brim to the hat. [8] X Research Sources

Open the hat to put it on your head. To look like a mountain, wear a hat with a triangle over your ears. To look like a pirate, wear a hat with a triangle on your forehead.

Find a piece of paper twice the height of the hat you want to make. For example, if you want the hat to be 30cm high, choose a piece of paper that is at least 60cm long. Choose a color that matches the type of hat you want to make. For example, pink is suitable for a medieval princess’s conical hat, while black is suitable for a witch’s hat. [9] X Research Source

  • Construction paper and notebook paper are suitable for making small hats. If you want to make something bigger like a princess hat or a witch hat, use paper as a poster.
Draw a half circle on the paper. You can use a plate, compass, or pencil wrapped around a string to draw a half circle. This circle needs to be twice as wide as the hat’s height. For example, if you want to make a princess hat 30cm high, the circle should be 60cm wide. [10] X Research Source

  • Draw a circle along one edge of the paper. That way you will have exactly half a circle.
Use scissors to cut the half circle out. If you used normal printing paper, you will now decorate it with paints, highlighters, stamps and stickers. At this point you drill to attach anything bulky to the hat. If you use paint, wait for the paint to dry.
Wrap the paper in a cone, then glue the edges. Wrap the two sides of the paper together, then stack the two layers of paper until it forms a cone. The deeper you roll the two layers of paper, the smaller the cone will be. Once satisfied with the size of the hat, connect the two edges of the paper with tape, clips or glue. [11] X Research Source
Cut the brim to attach to the hat if you want to make a witch’s hat. Stand the cone upright on a piece of paper and draw a circle around the base of the cone. Lift out the cone and draw a circle around the drawn circle to create a wider brim. Cut out the big circle and then continue to cut the small circle out of the big circle. Use masking tape or glue to attach the brim to the cone leg.

  • Hot glue works, but you can also use duct tape — tape on the inside of the hat so other people can’t see the tape.
  • Skip this step if you’re making other hats.
Press a thin rubber band to the base of the hat if desired. Cut a piece of rubber band long enough to wrap under your chin when you’re wearing the hat, plus 5cm. Tie a knot at each end of the rope and then press it to the base of the hat. Place the knot on the press. [12] X Research Source

Decorate hats to add personality. You can get creative at this stage. To make a difference, you just need to stick many different decorations on the hat. Using hot glue is best, but you can use all-purpose glue if you have no other choice. Here are some ideas for you:

  • Clown hat: paint lots of dots on the hat, then glue a large tasseled ball to the top of the hat.
  • Santa hat: stick a white tassel ball on the top of the hat, then glue more white tassel balls around the brim.
  • Party hats: cut a strip of crepe paper and stick it on the inside of the brim. Glue a tassel ball to the top of the hat with hot glue. [13] X Research Source
  • Princess hat: Glue strips made of crepe paper, tulle, or tissue to the top of the hat. Glue a white scarf around the base of the hat with hot scissors.
  • Witch hat: wrap a Halloween-colored ribbon around the base of the hat. Cut out a paper belt buckle and stick it on the ribbon.
  • Sorcerer’s hat: paint the stars and moon in gold or silver tint.

Let the hat dry before putting it on. The time it takes for the hat to dry depends on the glue you use. Hot glue will dry in minutes, but all-purpose glue takes hours. Once the glue dries, you can put on your hat!

Make a disc-shaped paper hat

Fold a large paper plate in half. Fold a thin paper plate about 25-30cm in size. Make sure both sides of the disc are white. Avoid using paper plates made from cardboard. [14] X Research Source
Cut off the edge of the disc. Rotate the plate so that the folded edge is vertical. Start cutting at the top of the fold and stop cutting when the scissors are about 2.5cm from the edge of the other fold. Cut closer to the edge of the plate for a large hat, or cut further away from the edge of the plate for a small hat. Don’t cut the entire circle out of the plate. [15] X Research Source

  • If you want to make a crown, cut the inside of the plate into several pizza wedges. Start cutting at the fold line and stop cutting inside the edge of the disc. Do not cut through the edge of the plate.
Draw half of some shape, starting at the 2.5cm uncropped segment. Use a pencil to sketch out half of a shape along the fold line, like a half heart or half star. Make sure the bottom of the shape connects to the 2.5cm uncut segment. [16] X Research Source

  • The figure you draw must connect to the 2.5cm uncut part so it won’t come apart.
  • Skip this step if you’re making the crown.
Cut along the line you drew. The excess paper between the symmetrical shape and the edge of the disc will come off. Discard this excess paper.
Open the plate and decorate the hat. When you open the disc, you will have a circle with a symmetrical shape in the center. Decorate the hat as desired and let it dry. [17] X Research Source

  • Use acrylic paint, poster paint or glue colors.
  • Paint the shapes on the hat with glitter.
  • Glue crystals or sequins to your hat for extra sparkle.
  • Decorate the hat with other items such as stickers, tassel balls or buttons.

Fold the inner shape up so it’s perpendicular to the hat. Find the junction between the shape and the hat. Fold the shape along the join so that it stands upright. If you are making the crown then simply fold all the triangles up. [18] X Research Sources

Wear a hat. If the cap is too small, cut around the inside edge of the plate to make it larger. If the hat is too big, cut off the brim at the back. Stack the ends on top of each other until the hat fits the head, then glue or clip.
  • Advice

    • Use different colors and decorations to make a special hat.
    • Use colors that match the festival or season, like orange and black for Halloween.

    Warning

    • Do not use a high temperature glue gun as it may burn you. You should use a low temperature glue gun.
