Open a text editor. When creating ASCII artwork, we’ll typically use a plain text editor, such as Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac), instead of a complex editor like Microsoft Word or Pages:

  • On Windows — Open Start
    Windows Start

    {“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/0/07/Windowsstart.png”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/0/07/ Windowsstart.png/30px-Windowsstart.png”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:460,”bigWidth”:30,”bigHeight”:30,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output “></div>”}

    , type notepad and then click the Notepad icon that appears at the top of the Start window.

  • On Mac — Open Spotlight
    Mac Spotlight

    {“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/e/ea/Macspotlight.png”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/e/ea/ Macspotlight.png/30px-Macspotlight.png”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:460,”bigWidth”:30,”bigHeight”:30,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output” “></div>”}

    , type textedit , and then double-click the TextEdit icon at the top of the search results list.

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/0/04/505243-2.jpg/v4-728px-505243-2.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https:// www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/0/04/505243-2.jpg/v4-728px-505243-2.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,” bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Determine what image you want to create. Before you start typing random symbols and letters into a text editor, you should think about the subject you want to draw.

  • Just knowing the outline of your subject is enough to get you started.
  • A rough sketch of your theme will make it easier to visualize the shape you need to use.

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/f/f4/505243-3.jpg/v4-728px-505243-3.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https:// www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/f/f4/505243-3.jpg/v4-728px-505243-3.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,” bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Start at the top of the drawing. Although it is common sense that you should create a sketch of the shape first and then paint the inside, with ASCII art it is much easier to draw line by line.

  • For example, if you are drawing a cat’s face, you should start with the ears.

Image titled 505243 4

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/1/11/505243-4.jpg/v4-728px-505243-4.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https:// www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/1/11/505243-4.jpg/v4-728px-505243-4.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,” bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Experiment with many different key combinations. Certain keys may be an obvious choice with keyboard art, but using different keys, lowercase letters, and symbol combinations results in better results.

  • For example, with the cat’s ears you’ll be inclined to use the caret ( ^ ) as the ear first; however, if a slash ( / ) is used next to the backslash ( ) will create a larger and more “ear-like” shape ( / ).

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/7/7c/505243-5.jpg/v4-728px-505243-5.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https:// www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/7/7c/505243-5.jpg/v4-728px-505243-5.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,” bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Adjust the spacing of each line if necessary. As the keyboard art begins to take shape, you may need to go back and align the line spacing to match the layer underneath.

  • For example, you may need to move the entire line forward or backward. There are also times when you have to add a space between two characters to extend the line.

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/0/04/505243-6.jpg/v4-728px-505243-6.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https:// www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/0/04/505243-6.jpg/v4-728px-505243-6.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,” bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Don’t be limited by symmetry. As with any art, the perspective of the image determines whether the image is symmetrical or not; sometimes one side will have more spaces or characters than the other side.

Consider the computer’s use of special characters. Keyboard keys include many accents and variations, but there are times when you want to use advanced symbols (such as temperature symbols) to represent additional layers or details. Both Windows and Mac computers have dedicated symbol menus:

  • With Windows — Character Map. You can open the Character Map by entering the character map in the Start window and clicking on the Character Map at the top of the window.
  • With Mac — Emoji & Symbps. You can open this menu by hovering your mouse pointer over TextEdit, clicking Edit at the top of the screen, and choosing Emoji & Symbps from the drop-down menu.

Rabbit shape. You can create bunny shapes with basic key symbols:

 (__/)
(='.'=)
(___/)
(")_(")

Create an owl. Unlike the rabbit art above, the owl is formed from more straight lines, so you need to use square brackets ([ ]) and the “straight book” sign:

 ,_,
[0,0]
|)__)
-”-”-

Cat design. The art of drawing cats with the keyboard is similar to drawing rabbits:

    Fish shape. You need to find the temperature symbol on your computer to create this ASCII artwork:

  • Advice

    • ASCII art is a handy alternative to images because many comment frames (such as on YouTube) do not support replies in a form other than text.

    Warning

    • Saving keyboard artwork as a file other than plain text (.txt) format may cause the image to be formatted and not as original.
