OpenDNS provides internet filtering services, which can block website access. If OpenDNS keeps you from accessing the website you want, you can change the DNS settings on your computer to connect to another DNS server. These servers will compile website addresses so you can connect to them. If you can’t change the DNS settings on your computer, you can use the Tor browser to access it.

When adjusting DNS settings on the operating system, these changes override any DNS settings on the router, so you can bypass OpenDNS. This doesn’t work if the router is configured to block all DNS requests except OpenDNS on port 53.

  • If unable to connect, try another public DNS provider.

Edit Hosts (hosts) file

Open the hosts file. The hosts file on your computer acts as the machine’s private DNS, allowing you to manually assign IP addresses to domain names. It will override any settings on the router.

  • Windows – The hosts file is usually located at C:WINDOWSsystem32driversetc . Right-click the hosts file and select Open With, then click Notepad.
  • Mac – Open Terminal and type sudo vi /private/etc/hosts .

Specify the IP address of the website you want to access. To add a website to the hosts file, you need to know the IP address of the website.

  • Open Command Prompt (Windows) or Terminal (OS X).
  • Type ping websiteaddress.com and press ↵ Enter . It will respond to the IP address of the website.
Add the IP address and hostname to the end of the hosts file. At the end of the file, you usually see 127.0.0.1 localhost . Add the new IP address and hostname after this line. Write in the format of the localhost line, including the IP address and hostname.

  • It is recommended that you write each hostname twice, with and without www. . For example, to add Facebook, you write one line the IP address with www.facebook.com , the other line write the IP address with facebook.com .
Save and close the file. You may have to restart your computer for the change to take effect. [1] X Research Source

Use Google Caching

Open a web browser. You can access the cached version of the website as it loads through Google. The recent version of caching isn’t perfect, but it’s not too outdated either.
Copy and paste the following address. Paste in your web browser’s address bar:

  • webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://example.com/
Replace . http://example.com/ with the address of the website you want to visit. For example, to access the cached version of Facebook, type webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:https://facebook.com/ .

Start accessing the internet. You should see the text “Congratulations!” (Congratulations) after successfully connecting to the Tor network, you can start accessing blocked websites.

  • When you want to use Tor, you just need to start the Tor browser. You do not need to go through the initial installation steps again.

Direct connection to Modem

Determine if this approach is feasible. OpenDNS interferes with router settings, which means any computer connected to the router is affected. If you want to connect your computer directly to the modem, bypassing the router entirely, you can bypass OpenDNS.
Unplug the router from the modem. As long as you don’t restart the router, the settings won’t change and no one will know.
Disconnect the computer from the router. If using a wireless network, disconnect from the network. If using a wired network, unplug the Ethernet cable that connects the computer to the router.
Connect the modem directly to the computer via an Ethernet cable. The computer can access the internet instantly.

  • Most modems do not have a wireless function because its only job is to manage the router.
  • If your modem is a router and modem combo, you’re out of luck.
  • Go to the website you want. Now that you’re connected to your modem, you can access any website that was previously blocked by OpenDNS. Remember to reconnect everything when you’re done.
