Think about how you want to change. The five-year plan will cover very different aspects, depending on what kind of person you are and what you want out of life. What would make your life easier? What will make you a happier person? [1] X Research Source

  • Look in the mirror and imagine yourself in five years. Where do you see yourself living? What are you doing? Be honest and realistic.
  • Maybe you are already quite happy and satisfied with life; Your five-year plan will be to keep moving forward on the path you’re on. If so, think more about what you need to continue living the life you’re enjoying.

Advice: Be as honest as possible. Don’t think about what you feel others are expecting from you; Instead, think about what really makes you happy.

Reflect on personal goals. Personal goals represent things that you hope will bring about a change in your personal life. Are you satisfied with yourself and what you are doing? How do you want to change who you are? This goal can be anything from getting more active in the dating game to choosing to play the banjo as a hobby. How would you like to change the way you spend your free time in the years to come? In what areas do you want to improve yourself? Some examples of personal goals for the next five years include:

  • Start writing a novel
  • Stop watching TV
  • Give up smoking
  • Form a band
  • Exercise more

Consider financial goals. How can you use the next five years of your life toward your goal of financial security? How will you take steps to get closer to your dream career? Even if you’re young and without a job, thinking about what career you want will help you figure out the next step to take. Examples of financial goals might include:

  • Save more money
  • Get a diploma
  • Offer to be promoted
  • Open a retirement fund
  • Find another job

Think about recreational goals. It’s also a good idea to spend some time thinking about the hobbies you want to enjoy in the next few years. Where do you want to travel? What would you like to do from now until you orbit the sun five more times? Recreational goals may include:

  • Skydiving, at least once
  • Go on a blind date
  • Conquering Lang Biang Peak
  • Traveling abroad
  • Go to a concert

Think about family goals. If you are married, what goals do you have for your home? What do you hope to accomplish with your family or for your family? If you are unmarried or newly married, what are your plans? What can you start doing to prepare for the future? Family goals can be:

  • Birth
  • Save money for your children’s education
  • Start sending your child to school
  • Renovate the house
  • Moving to a new bigger house
  • Going on vacation with family

The more specific the list, the better. It will be difficult to know what to do with a five-year plan with items like “Become a better person”, because it is difficult to define what needs to be done to get there. Instead, you should try to focus on clear goals that you can realistically achieve or can learn the steps needed to get there. Make your goal as specific as possible, and your plan will have a much higher chance of success. [2] X Research Source

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/f/fb/Write-a-Five-Year-Plan-Step-7-Version-3.jpg/v4-728px-Write- a-Five-Year-Plan-Step-7-Version-3.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/f/fb/Write-a-Five-Year- Plan-Step-7-Version-3.jpg/v4-728px-Write-a-Five-Year-Plan-Step-7-Version-3.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,” bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Identify the most important items on each list. Find in each category the things that you feel are most important to you at the moment. Try to limit yourself to no more than a few important goals, as you will have to narrow your focus and think specifically about sub-goals for each item.

  • Mark A, B, and C in the margins for each item on the list. A goal marked A is extremely important to you and is what you need most. The goal of marking C is fine, if achieved, but not too necessary or most desirable. Goals in between these two categories will be marked B. To figure out what to prioritize, you have to be very honest.

Tip: Alternatively, you can also order your list by the amount of time it takes you to complete the goals. If you have two goals “learn Italian” and “live organized” on your list, perhaps one can go a long way in the next week, the other will take longer.

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/2/20/Write-a-Five-Year-Plan-Step-8.jpg/v4-728px-Write-a-Five- Year-Plan-Step-8.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/2/20/Write-a-Five-Year-Plan-Step-8.jpg/ v4-728px-Write-a-Five-Year-Plan-Step-8.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:” <div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Make a separate list for each item. Once you’ve organized your five-year plan in order of most important items, pull out a new sheet of paper or open a new page. You need to write down each goal separately, especially if the goal is complex and takes a long time to accomplish.

  • If “get a diploma” on the list is considered the most important, make a separate list for each goal that you rank as equally important. Even seemingly simple items like “organized living” still require great attention.

Define sub-goals for each item. What do you need to accomplish a long-term goal like living an organized life or earning a diploma? What does it take to realize your goals?

  • You may need to do a little research to find out what it takes to make your goals a reality.

Write down each entry for each year. Once you’ve identified your sub-goals, break them down year by year to turn your long-term goals into a series of short-term goals that you can work on in order. What do you need to accomplish to get closer to your goal by the end of your freshman year? End of second year? What can you do today to start working toward your long-term goals? [3] X Research Sources

Tip: For some goals, you can use the method of going back in time. Visualize yourself becoming the person you want to be five years from now, then visualize what it takes to get there . If you see yourself earning your diploma, finding a good job and having a home in a beautiful location, what does it take to get you into that future? What would have to happen in the years before that?

Narrow focus. Make a list as specific as possible, further breaking down items into more manageable chunks. How detailed the list is is depends on how much or how little you need to add to each item on the list and how many moves it takes to complete the five-year plan. If you want to get your diploma in five years, what do you hope to achieve by the end of this year? What can you accomplish by the end of this week to get closer to your goal? What can you do right now?

Use realistic timelines. Set a specific time frame by which you will accomplish the goals you have set. If you want to run a marathon, you can give yourself a time frame of about a year or two instead of rushing it.

  • Try not to get discouraged. Remember that you are thinking about long-term goals. You need to continue to break down those big goals into a series of smaller, achievable tasks. Set smart goals and make a plan to get there.

Cross off completed items. Don’t underestimate the importance of cues that remind you of your journey toward your goals. Keep the five-year plan easy to follow and cross out each item when you’re done. That way you’ll have visual reminders of what you’ve accomplished.

Tip: Take a minute to celebrate each time you complete a task. You are very close to your goal in life, so treat yourself to a special gift. A dinner at a restaurant, a few glasses of your favorite drink or a spa session. Take time for yourself.

Pay attention to new goals that appear. The five-year plan can be a moving target. The job market can change suddenly and quickly, and the higher you climb the career ladder, the more you know what the market demands. The goal of becoming a lawyer sounded simple a few years ago, but as you progress through your law school years, you now have a clearer understanding of what to do.

  • From time to time revise your list of goals and include new things you notice and new goals that arise. Adjust the five-year plan based on new information. This is not a failure but a sign that you are learning more and getting closer to those goals.

Memorize the key points for the job interview. Employers will often ask you to describe your plans during an interview; That is also the potential benefit of the five-year plan. If you’ve prepared this plan, presenting it in detail can help you present yourself as a dedicated, organized person with clear goals in mind. Present the job you’re applying for as part of that goal, and you’ll emerge as a charismatic candidate.
  • Advice

    • One way to get there is to rewrite your goals each day with a present time description so that they become imprinted in your subconscious.
    • If new methods pop into your head, review your main goal and “method A” to see if they fit your plan. If necessary, rewrite your main goals and methods to see if they make any difference.
