Find a sock that is clean and long enough to cover part of the arm. A calf- or knee-high sock would be perfect for this! You can choose any color you like. Fluffy or plain socks are fine. You can even wear striped or polka dot socks! Just make sure the socks aren’t punctured.
Put the sock on your hand. Wrap the sock over your hand and curl your hand into a C shape. Insert your fingers into the toe of the sock. Try to get your thumb into the heel of the sock. If you can’t reach the heel, you can tuck your socks between your thumb and forefinger. [1] X Research Source

  • Open and close the hand. Your sock is now in the shape of a puppet.
Use a marker to dot 2 dots above the seam to make eyes. Add a dot if you want the puppet to have a nose. [2] X Research Source
Take off your socks. Spread the sock flat on the table. The dots make the eyes and nose seem out of place, but that’s okay. That’s why you have to dab your eyes and nose while wearing socks on your hands.
Stick your eyes on the sock. Use a hot glue gun, fabric glue or clay glue to attach the eyes. If you want the puppet to have more vivid eyes, you can use buttons, cotton balls or handmade fake eyes. You can also use markers to draw eyes.

  • If the puppet is a girl, remember to use a highlighter to add some eyelashes!
Attach a small cotton ball just above the seam for the stitch. You can also cut a triangle or circle out of felt instead of the cotton ball. A button can also become a pretty nose. If you don’t have any materials, you can just use a pencil to draw the nose!
Some other decorative touches. At this point, your puppet is considered complete, but you can add more embellishments to give it personality. For example, you can attach a few strands of wool to your head to make your hair. For more ideas, click here.

Make a unique puppet

Use fabric scissors to cut off the toe part of the sock. Find a sock long enough to partially cover the arm. Socks of any color or pattern will do. The solid color sock can do any character, and the polka dotted panther sock is great. You can even use the striped sock to make a zebra! Once you’ve chosen the right sock, cut off the toe section of the sock along the seam.

  • This puppet style made of ruffled socks is ideal, but you can also use plain socks.

Cut an oval about 10cm long out of cardboard. Find a thin piece of cardboard and draw an oval about 10cm long on the cover. This oval should be slightly narrower than the sock. [3] X Research Source Use scissors to cut the oval out.

  • You can get cardboard from old cake tins.
Cut an oval according to the shape drawn on the cover and set aside. Place the oval that you cut from the cardstock onto the felt fabric and trace it along. Cut an oval out of the felt and set aside. Later you will glue this piece of cloth to the inside of the puppet’s mouth.

  • Pink or red felt is best, but you can also use other colors.
Fold the oval in half with the cardboard to create a crease. Open the oval once it’s folded. Your cover piece will have a crease in the middle like a V shape, that’s it.
Thread the oval into the cut part of the sock. Hold the piece of cardboard in the shape of a V and thread it into the sock. Drag the cut edge of the sock beyond the edge of the oval. Don’t worry if it’s not very neat. You will correct it later. [4] X Research Sources
Glue the sock to the top and bottom edges of the oval. Put the sock down and open the mouth part. Pull the edges of the sock up to the top and bottom edges of the oval by about 1.3 cm. Use hot glue to stick it on. If the edges are a little wobbly, that’s okay. You will correct it in the next step. [5] X Research Sources

  • If you don’t have hot glue, you can use fabric glue or clay glue.
Glue the socks to the side edges of the oval. Pull the edge of the sock over the side of the oval about 1.3 cm and stick it on. Paste from top to bottom. Once you’ve glued one edge, you’ll glue the other side in the same way. [6] X Research Sources
Attach the felt oval to the mouth part. Draw a line of glue inside the puppet’s mouth and apply an oval piece of felt to the glue. Remember to align the edges to match. So the puppet’s mouth is colored and the cut edge of the sock is also covered. [7] X Research Sources

  • If using hot glue, you should do it little by little to prevent the glue from drying too quickly.

Puppet decoration. You can place the heel of the sock on the top or bottom of the puppet. Glue fake eyes or use buttons to make eyes. Add another small cotton ball or button for the nose. If you want the puppet to have a tongue, cut a piece of red or pink felt fabric into the shape of a long tongue, then stick it inside the mouth.

  • Don’t stick your tongue in your mouth so it can flex.

Embellish the puppet

Determine how your puppet needs to be decorated. You don’t have to follow everything from here on out. Look at the puppet and think what character it could play. Pick a few ideas from the list above, or create your own!
Make arms out of corduroy zinc wrapped in felt. Fold a cord of velvet in half, wrap a piece of felt fabric around and glue it back together. Cut the fabric so that it is about 2.5 cm longer than the velvet thread. Cut one end of the puppet’s arm into a hand shape, then attach the other end to the puppet.

  • Repeat this step to make the other arm.
Use yarn for hair if you like. Wrap some yarn around your hand (for short hair) or a book (for long hair). Loosen the loops and cut off one end. Tie a yarn in the middle to hold the wool. Stick this tuft of yarn on top of the puppet’s head, just above the eyes. [8] X Research Sources

  • The more loops you wrap, the thicker the puppet’s hair will be. You should wrap at least 10 loops.
  • You can use this technique to make a puppet’s mustache too!
  • Let your hair down or cut it. Braided into braids or loosely tied on both sides is also good.
  • You can also use corduroy or nylon fabric to make your hair.
Stick fake eyes on cotton balls to make the eyes bewildered. Glue 2 large cotton balls to the top of the puppet’s head. These two cotton balls are close to each other or far apart, it’s up to you. You will then glue the fake eye to the front of each cotton ball (not the top).
Add a few details. Here you can be creative! All you need is a canvas pen or marker. Try one of the ideas below:

  • Draw eyelashes if you are a girl puppet.
  • Dot a few freckles or a charming mole under the eyes.
  • Add bushy eyebrows or a mustache.
  • Draw a red puppet’s mouth border for lipstick.

Make accessories for puppets. Accessories can add a lot of personality to the puppet. All you need is some corduroy, buttons, glue, and some felt. Here are some suggestions for you:

  • Cut a felt bow or tie and stick it on the puppet.
  • Bending a pair of velvet zinc glasses.
  • Attach two style buttons on either side of the puppet’s head to make earrings.
  • Tie a bow with ribbon, then glue it to the top of the puppet’s head.
  • Use cotton balls, foam, or felt to turn the puppet into a monster. Puppets made of stockings already look funny, but you can give it an even crazier look by turning it into a monster. Try one of these ideas:

    • Attach cotton balls all over the puppet’s body to make lumps.
    • Cut triangles with felt or foam to make spikes.
    • Make some teeth or fangs. White foam is best suited for this.
    • Make horns out of styrofoam or zinc velvet.
  • Advice

    • Avoid wearing socks that are too thin or punctured.
    • You can make a beard or mustache with wool.
    • You don’t have to make puppets exactly like the instructions in this article. Use your imagination!
    • Your puppet doesn’t have to have two eyes. It can have one big eye, three eyes or more!
    • Make many puppets and make a puppet show.
    • If using fabric glue or hot glue, you will have to wait for the glue to dry.

    Warning

    • If you use a glue gun, ask an adult for help.
