Yellowstone: 1883 fans spot glaring historical Elsa Dutton error ‘Unrealistic!’
YELLOWSTONE fans have been loving the new period spin-off, 1883, so far, but some eagle-eyed viewers have noticed a distracting mistake in the latest chapter of the Duttons’ story.
1883: Paramount Network release first look at new series
1883 turns back the clocks all the way to the 19th Century, when James (played by Tim McGraw) and Margaret (Faith Hill) became the first Duttons to set foot on the Yellowstone reservation. Unfortunately, a number of people who tuned into last Sunday’s edition of the Paramount Network drama were unimpressed by a strange historical inaccuracy. Fans have been furiously debating the issue online as the first season starts to wrap up this month.
Fans have flocked to Twitter to point out a huge anachronism involving the Duttons’ 17-year-old daughter, Elsa (Isabel May).
As the narrator of the series, Elsa joins her parents, and brother John (Audie Rick), as they journey from Texas to Montana with ageing cowboy Shea Brenna (Sam Elliott).
So far, the prequel has proven to be both a revealing look at how the powerful Dutton family came to be, as well as an impressive retelling of the American West.
While the show’s period-accurate costumes, locations and dialogue have convinced fans thus far, some of the seams began to show in episode seven, Lightning Yellow Hair.

Several viewers took to social media when they realised Isabel’s hair extensions were clearly visible during a pivotal scene.
User @Calypsocooki joked: “How are you gonna have an episode titled specifically on hair and be showing tracks? I’m dying.”
Although the episode makes reference to Elsa’s striking blonde hair, the costume department apparently didn’t pay enough attention when covering up Isabel’s modern extensions.
Other fans noticed the error, and accused the series of not staying accurate to the show’s 1883 setting.

Twitter user shy said: “I’d like to have a word with the hair department on 1883.”
While Birdy fumed: “Her freshly bleached blonde roots were already annoying me but tonight’s obvious hair extension has done me in. WTF.”
And Leah added: “Guess they had hair extensions and highlights in 1883? Who didn’t catch this when filming?”
While the Duttons’ costumes may be accurate for the most part, Elsa’s hair has clearly been dyed lighter than actress Isabel’s natural colour, which wouldn’t have been possible for 19th Century travellers.

Moreover, the clip of one of her hair extensions being on show for all to see during a close-up shot has clearly broken the illusion for a significant portion of the show’s audience.
Paramount viewer Ed Leigh claimed Elsa’s character has been inaccurate throughout the first season.
They explained: “I’ve said from the beginning that for a show thats claims to be authentic, Elsa looks like she was teleported from 1960s Santa Monica to the prairies of the 1880s.
“Women did not wear their hair OR their blouses like she does. I know she’s a free spirit, but it’s very unrealistic.”
After the popularity of the flagship Yellowstone show, 1883 clearly has the budget of a massive TV drama.
While the series has delivered some compelling drama and impressive action so far, hopefully a little more time is spent on the Duttons’ era-appropriate look next time round.
Y: 1883 continues Sundays on Paramount in the USA. A UK release date has yet to be confirmed.
