Yellow and Blue Make Green Snack Idea for Kids
Blue and yellow make…
…what DOES blue and yellow make? Instead of just answering the kids questions today, let’s have a little tasty snack color mixing lesson that is so much fun they will never look at colors quite the same!
Yellow And Blue Make…
In this fun snack time lesson, combine vanilla pudding with M&M candies for green goodness kids will love! This is such a fun way for a younger toddlers or preschoolers to learn about colors and color mixing.
Yellow Color Day + Blue Color Day = Green Color Day!
When we first started learning our colors, my kids and I had color days.
- Each color day was devoted to learning all about the specific color and finding items in the house and while we were out that matched that color.
- For instance, yellow color day would be filled with finding yellow items, identifying yellow parts of things and making yellow food.
- Blue color day was the same.
- And then I started planning a St. Patricks Day lesson and realized that we needed to combine yellow color day and blue color day to celebrate the ultimate green color day, St. Patrick’s Day.
Obviously, you can use this celebration of the color green on any day of the year!
My kids love this easy color mixing snack because they like watching the colors change right before their eyes while mixing it with a spoon.
Simple Color Mixing Science Experiment for Kids
As a parent, you’ll love it too because your kids are learning about basic art principles and science experimentation all in a yummy snack. Before adding the candy, you can encourage your kids to predict what will happen. For example, you might ask:
- “What will happen to the color of the pudding if we put blue candies into it?”
- “What do you think the pudding will look like if we mix in yellow and blue candies together?”

Ingredients Needed – Color Mixing Snack
- Vanilla or coconut pudding, plain yogurt, a milkshake, even light colored applesauce
- M&M candies (we used blue, yellow, and green)
- Small bowls
- Spoons
Instructions – Color Mixing Snack
Step 1
First, sort the M&Ms by color (blue, yellow, green). My youngest son had fun putting them into separate small bowls.
Step 2
Next, take a pudding cup and remove the package seal. This is where you can ask experimentation questions and make theories before you start adding the M&Ms.
Step 3
Then add equal amounts of blue and yellow M&M candies to the pudding cup.
We used six blue candies and six yellow candies. They can add more blue and yellow or green M&Ms to intensify the color.
Step 4
Stir in the colored candy and have the child test their theory.
Guess what?
Yellow and blue really do make green!
Step 5
Finally, eat your science and art project! YUMMY!
