Hair Toning can sometimes be a bit of a mystery..What are they? Why does my stylist say I need to come in for one? Does it add colour, shine & health?
We’re getting to the bottom of it now so you know exactly what’s going on at your next hair appointment when your stylist tells you they are about to apply a hair toner.
1. This is when the colour is added
When your hair is lightened and bleached, the pigment is being taken out of the hair. The toner is what is used after this to add in the desired tones to the hair, whether it’s icy blonde, golden or copper. It’s actually the most important part of the colouring process and means the difference to you walking out of the salon with yellow, brassy locks or a golden, creamy mane.
2. It’s Not Permanent
Hair toners aren’t a permanent colour – they can last up to six weeks depending on a variety of things. Hair that hasn’t been coloured before tends to grab colour a lot better than heavily processed locks. This is why we have Davines Alchemic Shampoo and Conditioners, Fanola No Yellow and No Orange Shampoo for home use to keep your toner looking fresher for longer. It is so important to make sure you have specific shampoo for your colour at home to ensure you can maintain your desired colour for as long as possible in between appointments.
P.s. If you’re washing your hair everyday, your toner will fade fast. The longer time you can build in between washing without hitting grease city, the better.
3. Not Just For Blondes
Toner can be used on any hair colour – and even on uncoloured hair to add a serious high gloss! They’re mainly used for tone correction so you can achieve that warm brown or icy blonde, but if you want to maintain your natural colour but add amazing shine, then toners can be used to intensify your mane.
4. Hair Tone At Home
There is a big difference between Shampoos and Conditioners that contain toning agents and toners alone. A lot goes into your stylist calculating the perfect toner for you, so unless you have a good experience with toners and have a good understanding of colour correction, just stick with Shampoos and Conditioners. If you get the toning process wrong at home you could be left walking around with green hair and spending more on your mane at your emergency appointment.
SO..next time your hair stylist starts talking about toners and what kind of shade you’re wanting to go for, you’ll know exactly what’s about to go down.
