What is Energy Star?
The Energy Star label was developed in the US in 1992 . This is an internationally recognized standard for the energy efficiency of electronic devices and household appliances.
After that, the Energy Star label was recognized and applied by countries such as Japan, Australia, and Taiwan to products to protect the environment and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
In Vietnam , the Energy Star label has been recognized by the Ministry of Industry and Trade . The Vietnamese name is often called “Vietnamese energy star” . These Energy Star labeled appliances are energy efficiency products that meet or exceed the high energy efficiency (HEPS) level.
Advantages of products labeled with Energy Star energy
The advantages that Energy Star labeled devices can include are:
- The device can be used continuously for a long time.
- Energy saving , environment friendly.
- The device has the ability to self -regulate to cool the engine during operation.
- Good durability .
Criteria and conditions for obtaining the Energy Star energy label
Energy Star standard in Vietnam
Before July 1, 2011 , companies manufacturing electronic and household appliances can voluntarily apply the Energy Star energy label on their products. However, after that, Energy Star energy labeling is required .
Currently, on the Vietnamese market, there are two types of energy labels: certified Energy Star and comparable Energy Star:
- Energy Star confirmed
– This is a label with a star icon with the words energy saving .
– The certified Energy Star labeling program will be regulated by the Ministry of Industry and Trade from time to time.
Energy Star certification is applied to products such as transformers, monitors, light bulbs, ballasts, electric motors, printers, etc.
- Energy Star comparison
– Energy Star comparison labels make it possible for consumers to compare energy consumption between electrical appliances.
– Labels are applied to products such as washing machines, air conditioners, fans, rice cookers.
– The information specified on the label
01 : Certification code issued by the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
02 : Name/Product code.
03 : Manufacturer.
04 : Importer.
05 : The part showing the energy saving rating index.
06 : Energy consumption of the product (kWh/year).
Energy Star label standards for appliances
For different devices , the standards are also different. The devices will go through a rigorous screening process by the EPA – the US Environmental Protection Agency. After that, if the product completely meets the standards , it will be granted an Energy Star energy label certificate .
- Computers: From September 10, 2014 , products on computer equipment must meet the level of Energy Star 6.1 standard.
- Refrigerator: Energy used for the refrigerator needs to save 20% compared to the minimum standard.
- Dishwasher: Need to save at least 41% energy.
- Air conditioners: Must be at least 10% more energy efficient than the US federal government minimum standards.
- TV: 30% less energy used than average.
- Fluorescent lights: At least 75% less energy used than incandescent light.
- LED: 75% less energy used than incandescent light.

In order to qualify for the Energy Star label, LED products must meet the following criteria:
- About performance: Average efficiency from 130 – 150 lm/w to save power consumption.
- About service life: Minimum 50,000 hours of light use for long-term use, avoiding costly continuous replacement.
- For radiators: The radiator must be thick to be able to reduce the temperature faster, avoiding consuming a lot of power.
- In terms of luminous flux: The luminous flux index must be 3 times higher than that of a traditional light bulb and must not degrade in luminous flux over time.
- About the color temperature range: Must be on average from 2700 ~ 6700k.
- About LED chips: Products must apply the most modern and advanced LED technology, possessing outstanding light.
Advantages of LED lights that meet Energy Star energy label standards
- At least 75% energy saving compared to conventional incandescent lamps.
- Life expectancy is at least 30 times longer than traditional lamps and does not require frequent repairs.
- The heatsink works very well so the heat emitted from the lamp is low.
- The light is better than other types of lighting such as fluorescent or incandescent lamps.
- Excellent light and color quality , no deterioration over time.
- No flickering when the light is on.
- No harm /bad effect to eyes.
