SuperSIM was first launched, attracting the attention of technology followers around the world. So what is SuperSIM? What are the characteristics? Is this the trend of the future?
What is SuperSIM?
Super SIM is a type of sim that combines a SIM card and a MicroSD card into a single sim card.
The first Super SIM was announced last year in China and it comes in different capacities starting from 32GB and going up to 128GB. These Super SIM cards also have read and write speeds of 90MB/s and 60MB/s, respectively.
Features of SuperSIM
When compared to what a traditional SIM can store about 128KB, a Super SIM can store many millions more data.
Super SIM also features one-click backup and restore, so you can put it in your new phone and restore data from your old phone. This type of sim is also secure (receives CC EAL6+ security certification) so you don’t have to worry about the security of your data.
Advantages of SuperSIM
For users, SuperSIM takes the hassle out of choosing between a SIM card or a MicroSD card if your phone has a dual SIM tray, because just buy a SuperSIM and you get both additional storage and a second SIM.
For manufacturers, there’s no need to make a phone with a triple card tray or one with a dedicated MicroSD card slot. This means, there could be more space for a slightly larger battery or for another extra component.
Disadvantages of SuperSIM
Currently, Super SIM is sold only in China and is still quite expensive. A 32GB SuperSIM sells for around $14 while a 64GB card costs around $28. This is quite expensive when compared to the price of a MicroSD card with the same storage capacity.
The current price is expected to decrease in the future when this type of sim is more popular. However, the application is still a matter of concern. SuperSIM can only work with phones with paired SIM card trays. This causes limited use with phones (especially flagships) that do not have this type of SIM tray, thus making adoption difficult.
Another downside is that customers are not willing to buy a SuperSIM and have trouble replacing the regular SIM card with a Super SIM.
With many people ordering phones online and simply inserting their SIM card into a new device, there is no need to go to the network operator’s store and this convenience is completely impossible to find with a SuperSIM.
And a final limitation that still makes many people wonder is what happens to SuperSIM when you switch to a phone that doesn’t support storage expansion?
Will SuperSIM become a trend in the future?
While Super SIM does have its advantages, it’s still relatively new and might not gain popularity if network operators don’t adopt it.
However, Super SIM should have more opportunities by network operators. While a lot of flagships don’t support memory card storage expansion, millions of mid-range and low-cost phones now with dual SIM trays are sold every year and these customers can be the target of SuperSIM.
