In the process of using electronic devices such as phones, computers, televisions, laptops, … you must have heard the phrase DLNA technology. So what is DLNA? What is DLNA connection? Let’s find out more details with Tnhelearning.edu.vn in the article below!
What is DLNA technology?
DLNA technology is known as the Digital Living Network Alliance – This is a non-profit company founded by Sony in 2003. Gradually, the Digital Living Network Alliance has grown to 250 members around the world including design companies. consumer electronics, mobile phones, laptops.
With DLNA, you can easily connect to other devices via a shared local network, as well as share the phone screen on the TV.
DLNA devices use UPnP – Universal Plug and Play code to understand this code, DLNA divided into 4 main groups:
- The server contains the data and is accessible to the user. The server can be a NAS with DLNA or a computer with Windows Media Player.
- A music player, movie player or a device with DLNA is used to access the above server.
- Digital control device.
- DLNA Printer (Example: Wi-Fi Instant Photo Camera).
What can and can’t DLNA do?
The purpose of DLNA is made so that home networking equipment and media can easily share media content. Even if the devices are different, they only need to connect to the same local network to be able to connect to each other.
DLNA technology can do things like watch movies, listen to music, view and print photos:
- For watching movies: DLNA allows users to share videos stored in phones, laptops or camcorders that can be projected onto TVs for a full experience.
- For listening to music: You can easily convert music files through different devices such as phones to computers without any other wired connection.
- For photo printing: Easily share photos to DLNA-enabled devices or printers with Wi-Fi connection, so you can print photos quickly.
What can DLNA not do?
- For movie format: MP4 part 2 (DivX), MP4 part 10 (H.264) does not support AVI and MKV formats.
- For image format: Only PNG and JPEG image formats are supported.
- For music format: DLNA only supports AC3, AMR, ATRAC3, LPCM, MP3, MPEG4, and WMA. Does not support DTS and Hi-res music standards.
Special features of DLNA technology
The Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) protocol is integrated with the DLNA connection to help manage and control the file supply. This is a protocol that helps determine if a device has DLNA and instructs the device to access files on the local network.
Devices that support DLNA include:
- Home network equipment: Devices capable of transferring content to other devices such as laptops, computers, …
- Smart mobile devices: Devices that store content and have the ability to put it on the local network for other devices such as smartphones, tablets,…
- Infrastructure devices: These are handheld devices that wirelessly connect to the local network and that convert between content formats for the home network.
Pros and cons of DLNA?
To be able to use DLNA effectively, you need to understand some of the advantages and disadvantages of the DLNA connection. Let’s find out together with Tnhelearning.edu.vn:
Advantage:
- Easy to connect and use.
- High user interaction.
- The devices are all connected if DLNA is available.
- Minimize storage memory.
Defect:
- An outdated technology compared to current wireless technologies such as Screen Mirroring, Google Cast or Photo Share, Smart View,…
- Internet connection required.
- Pay costly fees.
- Many file formats will be restricted.
Devices that support DLNA connection
Currently, many products have been DLNA certified, of which the majority are electronic devices such as televisions, smartphones, cameras, … and the number of DLNA certified products today is also increasing.
Some products that support DLNA include:
- Smartphones: Samsung Galaxy Note, Samsung Galaxy S,…
- Printer: HP Photosmart Premium Fax All-in-One Printer CQ521, Samsung CLX-3180 Series,…
- Camera: Sony Cybershot DSC-G3, Samsung SH100,…
