What is Apple’s new Intercom feature?

Intercom is a feature that transmits audio messages (by giving Siri voice commands) on Apple devices to many other Apple devices at the same time, helping users communicate quickly and conveniently.

Intercom Supported Apple Devices

In order for Intercom to run on your Apple device, update the corresponding software version to the latest version as follows:

• iPhone and iPod touch iOS 14.2 or later
• iPad running iPadOS 14.2 or later
• Apple Watch running watchOS 7.1 or later
• HomePod running 14.1 or later

How to install Intercom

After updating the HomePod speaker to software 14.1 and iOS 14.2, Intercom can be set up in the Home app.

Intercom works if you have a HomePod or another compatible device. Currently, there is no application other than Home to use Intercom.

Step 1 : Install HomePod 14.1 software.

Step 2 : Open the Home app.

Step 3 : Click on the small house icon on the left corner.

Step 4 : Click on Home Settings.

Step 5 : Scroll down and select Intercom.

Step 6 : Adjust the notification settings and select which members of the house can use the Intercom feature.

Those with remote access to the Home app can send and receive audio Intercom messages to their iPhone and Apple Watch even when they’re not at home.

You can also add anyone so they can use the Intercom by going to the Home Settings screen, selecting Invite People .

Intercom messages can be sent to HomePods using Siri on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and other HomePods. To send an Intercom message, activate Siri on the above devices and say “Intercom” plus the message you want to send.

In the iPhone’s Home app, there’s a small sound wave icon in the upper right corner, click it to record a message then send it to devices.

How to use Intercom to send messages from HomePod to another device

You can use HomePod to send messages to HomePods in your home or devices that include other family members.

In the same way as above, activate Siri and say Intercom plus a message that you can send messages to connected devices.

To reply to an Intercom message

If you receive an Intercom message and want to return, you activate Siri, say “reply + message”.
