What is a mag?
Mount is the name for the part between the camera and the detachable lens that connects the camera and lens. This is an important and indispensable part of any interchangeable-lens camera.
Cameras and lenses with the same mount standard will be compatible with each other , if different, there are now several types of adapters, which help this lens mount to be connected to cameras with other mount standards.
Example: Canon lenses and Canon cameras are different from Canon mounts or lenses and Nikon cameras.
Each camera manufacturer will have its own mount standards. Based on that, the production, design of lenses and cameras will follow these common standards. At the same time, third-party manufacturers can also produce lenses that are compatible with genuine cameras.
Types of camera mounts, Canon lenses
Canon cameras have 3 main types of mounts for connecting lenses, namely EF, EF-S and EF-M . These mounts can be made from plastic, or metal depending on the model.
Mount EF
The full name is Electro Focus or electronic focus mount. This is the type of mount that was made standard in 1997. The EF mount is used on many of Canon’s EOS and Full Frame series, and was very popular in the past.
If there is only 1 red dot on the mount, it is an EF mount.
Mount EF-S
The EF-S (Electro Focus Short) mount appeared in 2003, when Canon released a new camera, the Canon EOS 300D with this mount design. Currently, EF-S is widely used on cameras with APS-C sensors.
The EF-S has a shorter rear focal length range compared to EF-mount lenses.
The distinguishing feature of this type of mount is a red dot with a white square.
Mount EF-USA
The EF-M mount was introduced by Canon in 2012, used on the mirrorless Canon EOS M series (Mirrorless cameras), in line with the increasingly compact camera trend.
This mount standard allows the use of standard EF, EF-S lenses through an adapter supported by Canon itself.
A Canon camera or lens using the EF-M mount can be easily identified by a single white dot on the mount.
