Vertical Hydroponics DIY Systems
This vertical hydroponics DIY section will cover some of the systems we covered in our Vertical Hydroponics systems designs article, but we will be realistic about what you would want to make and can actually make for a home system. We cover Vertical Tower Systems as well as Stacked Vertical Hydroponic DIY Systems. Vertical systems are situated so the growing tray, tower, or tube is situated vertically and usually each tower has its own reservoir.
Stacked Vertical Hydroponic DIY Systems are actually other system designs like Nutrient Film technique, Deep Flow Technique, and Dutch buckets stacked vertically to repeat the original system. They may be one system with a common reservoir or they may be independent systems each with its own reservoir.
There’s a lot going on here so for now we will cover most of these Builds with videos. Stacked Vertical Hydroponics DIY Systems
Stacked NFT System
We cover this system build in the Nutrient Film Technique Build article. The only difference here is we stack 2 more systems on top of the original one. You can either make them 3 separate systems, each with its own reservoir, or you can tie all the supply lines together and the drain lines together and use a reservoir that is 3x larger. The benefit of 3 separate systems allows you to experiment with the pH and EC levels when growing different veggies in each system.
For example, if you have a 25-gallon reservoir then you will need a 75-gallon reservoir for this Vertical Hydroponics DIY system (25-gallons x 3 systems= 75 gallons).
As a general rule, you will want to use 1 gallon of water per plant in your reservoir ideally so that you don’t have rapid pH and EC swings or changes.
Stacked Wall System
Stacked Dutch or Bato Bucket System
This system build is covered in the Dutch Bucket System Build. Here, we stack 2 more rows like a set of bleachers. The nutrient water is pumped into the top of each of the highest buckets. Then it drains out of the bottom of each container into the top of the lower Dutch bucket, finally returning to the reservoir. You can either make them 3 separate systems or run the drain lines all back to one larger reservoir.
