Over the course of his appearances, Thor has undergone one of the biggest transformations in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When fans were first introduced to Thor, he was arrogant, selfish, and entitled. The first Thor movie depicted Thor and his brother Loki as Shakespearean-esque characters trapped in a dysfunctional royal family. However, since then, Thor has used all the loss, love, and personal discovery he has experienced to grow as a person, find his identity and become truly worthy of Mjolnir.
Unlike Thor, his siblings Loki and Hela did not fully grow and mature after what they experienced as children of Odin, becoming villainous and nefarious instead. Both have terrorized Thor and the Nine Realms at large, seemingly competing with one another to be the worst sibling possible.
10 Loki: Betrayed His Family
In Thor, Loki demonstrated just how much mischief he could cause as he manipulated and betrayed his family. After Thor was banished to Earth and Loki’s adoptive father, Odin, was incapacitated by falling into an Odinsleep, Loki took over as the king of Asgard.
Desperate to maintain this power, Loki lied to Thor and told him that Thor’s actions had put too much stress on Odin, resulting in Odin’s death. Additionally, he made a deal with the Frost Giants to allow them to kill Odin. When the Warriors Three traveled to Earth to tell Thor the truth, Loki sent the Destroyer to kill them all. Ultimately, Loki’s plan was thwarted but he was willing to kill his brother and father in order to be king.
9 Hela: Conquered With Odin
As Odin’s firstborn child, Hela served as his right hand and the commander of Asgard’s army as they conquered and subdued the Nine Realms. Eventually, Odin was satisfied with the worlds they had conquered and wanted to live in peace while Hela desired further war and destruction.
This disagreement led to Hela leading a coup against Odin. Odin defeated Hela and banished her to Hel, ensuring that she could not escape and return to Asgard as long as he was alive. Hela revealed her villainy through constant violence, bloodshed, and even treason.
8 Loki: Attacked Earth
After Loki was initially defeated by Thor, he aligned himself with Thanos on the promise that he would become the ruler of Earth in exchange for capturing the Tesseract, which contained the Space Stone. Thanos gave Loki an army and an Infinity Stone to use to conquer Earth. Using the power of his Infinity Stone, Loki began enslaving humanity with mind control and eventually unleashed his Chitauri army.
Thor and the newly formed Avengers passed their first test, working together to defeat Loki and stop the alien invasion. In the process, Loki caused untold destruction and would have enslaved the entire planet were it not for the Avengers.
7 Hela: Killed The Valkyries
While imprisoned in Hel, Hela attempted to escape and regain her power. Odin sent his mightiest warriors, the Valkyries, to prevent her escape. Despite their strength and numbers, Hela overpowered and killed the Valkyries, leaving only Brunnhilde alive but scarred forever after witnessing the slaughter of her fellow Valkyries.
Eventually, Odin stepped in and stopped Hela from escaping, but not before the damage was done. The killing of the Valkyries demonstrated Hela’s power and ruthlessness as she was willing to kill an entire army of her own people just to try to gain freedom.
6 Loki: Faked His Death
While Loki was imprisoned for his treason, Dark Elves attacked Asgard and killed his mother, Frigga. This prompted Thor to release Loki from his cell, promising him freedom and revenge if he helped Thor find Malekith, the leader of the Dark Elves.
During this endeavor, Thor was nearly beaten to death by a Kursed Dark Elf warrior. Loki ran to his brother’s aid and killed the Dark Elf, sustaining a mortal wound in the process. The two brothers shared a heartfelt moment that seemed to finally put their past behind them. However, this was just another one of Loki’s tricks. He survived, murdered an Asgardian guard, stole his armor, and snuck back into Asgard. While Thor was emotionally impacted by his brother’s words and sacrifice, it was actually just more manipulation.
5 Hela: Destroyed Mjolnir
One of Thor’s most emotional moments came as he said goodbye to his father, Odin, in Norway in Thor: Ragnarok. The two had a complicated relationship, but his love for Odin was clear. Just moments after Odin’s death, Hela appeared, gleeful over his passing. Emotional and enraged, Thor threw Mjolnir at Hela, not thinking about the fact that she was the former owner of the hammer.
She easily caught Mjolnir and destroyed it with her bare hands. This encounter ended with Hela sending Thor and Loki to Sakaar while she returned to Asgard. Hela disrupted a powerful moment of mourning for Thor and sent him into a crisis of identity by destroying Mjolnir.
4 Loki: Impersonated Odin
While everyone believed him to be dead, Loki snuck back to Asgard and removed Odin from the throne, sending him to a care home on Earth, which was later destroyed, leaving Odin’s whereabouts unknown. Loki then impersonated Odin and ruled over Asgard as king, setting up monuments and tributes to himself.
Allowing his brother to believe he was dead, losing track of their father, and lying to the entire kingdom, all further demonstrated what Loki was willing to do in order to hold onto power.
3 Hela: Attacked Asgard
With Odin dead and Loki and Thor stranded on Sakaar, Hela returned to Asgard to claim the throne. She single-handedly took on the entire Asgardian army, killing thousands of them. She joyfully walked through the midst of the fallen Asgardians, reveling in the bloodshed.
She took the throne and used the Eternal Flame in Odin’s Vault to resurrect her army of fallen soldiers, along with Fenris, her giant wolf mount. Hela was willing to destroy anyone and anything in her path on her way to taking over Asgard.
2 Loki: Redeemed Himself
After the events of Thor: Ragnarok, Thor, and Loki found themselves bonding and beginning to make amends. However, at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War, their ship was attacked and devastated by Thanos and the Black Order as Thanos sought the Space Stone. Thanos tortured Thor, demanding that he give him the Infinity Stone.
To save his brother’s life, Loki handed over the Infinity Stone and attempted to stab Thanos. Thanos blocked the attack and killed Loki. While there is still an alternate timeline version of Loki in the MCU, this main timeline version finally redeemed himself at the very end of his life. Despite everything, Loki was willing to sacrifice himself to save his brother; he was far from being the worst sibling.
1 Hela: Destroyed Asgard
Thor and the Revengers battled against Hela, trying to liberate Asgard. When they realized that they could not defeat her, they evacuated everyone off the planet. In their desperation, Thor and Loki allowed Surtur to fulfill his destiny by destroying Asgard. Surtur stabbed Hela with his Twilight Sword, driving his blade into the core of the planet, causing Asgard to explode.
Hela’s viciousness and refusal to surrender led to the destruction of Thor’s homeworld. In their final moments, Loki redeemed himself and showed his love for Thor whereas Hela’s final moments proved her villainy and cemented her status as Thor’s worst sibling.
