The Witcher: How many seasons of The Witcher will there be?
THE WITCHER recently made a comeback with season 2, which saw the story again drawing from the books and short stories by Andrzej Sapkowski. Many fans have already binged the Netflix fantasy series and are curious to know how many seasons of the show there will be in total.
The Witcher: Netflix releases tense trailer for series 2
Netflix’s adaptation of The Witcher has been a huge hit with audiences globally and viewers lapping up the adventures of Geralt of Rivia (played by Henry Cavill) as he wanders the Continent slaying beasts. The drama series has been created by Lauren S. Hissrich, who has adapted the material of Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. But what does the future hold for the series?
How many seasons of The Witcher will there be?
Sapkowski’s The Witcher franchise consists of six novels and 15 short stories.
He started off penning short stories focusing on Geralt but as The Witcher grew in popularity, he branched out into novels.
Season one of The Witcher took its cue from the short story collections Sword of Destiny and The Last Wish.
The second series was adapted from the short story A Grain of Truth from The Last Wish as well as the novel Blood of Elves – which is the first part of The Witcher saga.

Additionally, some material from the following novel Time of Contempt was said to be used for the show.
Going by this, it appears each season consists of a couple of novels each time and so season three could continue adapting material from Time of Contempt before moving on to Baptism of Fire.
Netflix has already confirmed season three of The Witcher with the American streaming servicing announcing the news in September 2021 as part of its TUDUM event.
There’s no firm release date for the third outing but it could be another 18 months with fans getting the next outing in 2023.

Also, the coronavirus pandemic saw filming and production pushed back as season two was hit with a series of delays.
Again, the pandemic could potentially affect series three but generally the show takes time to make given the amount of special effects and expansive storytelling involved.
Beyond season three, there’s been no confirmation about how many seasons there could be.
However, there could potentially be a total of five seasons with a possible fourth outing using material from The Tower of the Swallow and The Lady of the Lake.
A fifth and final outing could be based on the standalone novel Season of Storms.
Based on just Sapkowski’s novels, it seems like there could be a total of five seasons of The Witcher on Netflix.
This, however, doesn’t take into account Sapkowski perhaps starting to write exclusive scripts for Netflix or writing additional novels in the meantime.
If this is the case, then fans can expect plenty more from The Witcher going forward with even a sixth series.

There’s also the possibility the writers could venture into completely new territory and diverge from the novels altogether to create fresh stories.
Ultimately, the future of The Witcher lies with Netflix and the viewing figures. If there’s an appetite for The Witcher then the streamer will try to tap into this but if it wanes, the axe could also fall on the show.
Along with the main series, Netflix has also commissioned The Witcher: Blood Origin – a prequel show which looks at how the very first of the titular monster hunters was created as well as the events building up to the Conjunction of the Spheres,
To boot, there will be The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf – an anime series and also a more family-friendly show existing within the same universe.
Even if the parent series does eventually end, it looks like the lifespan of The Witcher on Netflix could be extended in many different directions.
