Former Walking Dead star Chandler Riggs has opened up about his character’s controversial death.
Despite the fact that Carl Grimes is still alive in the comics source material, Rick’s son succumbed to a walker bite in the middle of the eighth season.
But before he died, Carl had a moment of heroism, confronting and distracting Negan so that his fellow Alexandrians could evacuate and survive the destruction of their home.

“I’m going to be honest,” he said at Fandemic Tour Sacramento (via ComicBook.com). “When [former showrunner Scott Gimple] told me how it happened, he didn’t mention the whole ‘Saviors blowing up all of Alexandria’ thing.
“He just kind of said I go to hide in the sewers and just die. I was like, ‘Man, that does not sound cool at all.
“But then, when I read episode eight, I was like, ‘Oh, OK, there’s huge explosions, there’s solar panels being blown up, churches blown up, houses exploding’. I was like, ‘OK, that’s pretty cool, I’m satisfied’.”
Riggs recently shared a behind-the-scenes tidbit – revealing who Negan killed with Lucille in alternate and deleted scenes.
He also spoke about Andrew Lincoln’s departure from the show as Rick. Lincoln is reported to be only appearing in six more episodes, with AMC offering actor Norman Reedus a huge new contract to make his character Daryl the new lead.
“Andy has been on the show for so long and he’s had to leave his family every single year,” Riggs said.
“I was surprised, but at the same time, it’s going to be good for him to get back to his family and raise his kids.”
The Walking Dead airs on AMC in the US, and on FOX and Now TV in the UK.
