Andrea
Andrea (portrayed by Laurie Holden) was traveling with her younger sister, Amy, when she encountered the walking dead.
Andrea was on a road trip heading for her younger sister’s college campus when they were stranded in Atlanta by zombies. It was there they met Dale and he helped them get to safety.
Using Dale’s RV camper as an anchor, Dale, Andrea and Amy set up a survivor’s camp outside of Atlanta. After the camp is attacked by zombies, Amy is bitten and killed, which forces Andrea to shoot her again after she turns into a zombie.
In the Season 1 finale, after the group finds out that the CDC is going to self-destruct, a depressed Andrea opts to stay with Dr. Jenner and die in the explosion. Dale, who seems to both want to be Andrea’s father and husband, sits next to her and tells her that if she was going to die, he was going to die too. That ploy gets Andrea to leave the CDC with the rest of the group, although now she resents Dale for putting her in that position and taking away her choice to die.
Season 2
When Andrea finds out that Shane wants to take off on his own, she asks to go with him.
As of right now Andrea has forgiven Dale, but still hangs around Shane, wanting him to teach her how to shoot. Feeling very gung-ho about shooting, Andrea almost kills Daryl with a rifle when he returns the farm limping and covered in mud, believing that he’s a zombie.
Still feeling a connection with Shane, Andrea and Shane have sex in a car after the two of them kill a bunch of zombies in a suburban community near the farm.
Andrea agrees with Shane’s decisions but tells him that he needs to work on his approach. She thinks he’s the best leader for the group. Andrea gets into an argument with Lori regarding their different roles in the group. Andrea thinks Lori takes for granted that she still has a husband, son, and baby on the way, while everyone else has lost a lot. She also brings up Lori going off on her own and crashing her car. While Lori is playing house, Andrea feels she’s helping to keep the group safe by keeping watch and being able to defend everyone with weapons. When Beth becomes suicidal, Andrea is reminded of when Dale took her choice away from her, and thus allows Beth to make her own decision. Andrea feels vindicated when Beth fails to kill herself by only slightly cutting her wrists, taking that as a sign that Beth wants to live. However, this also leads to Andrea being somewhat kicked out of the house by Maggie.
Andrea agrees to guard Randall when Dale asks her to, although she doesn’t agree with what he thinks. She’s not sure what to think when Shane wants to stage even a nonviolent takeover. During the meeting, Andrea backs Dale up, albeit not in a passionate way. It’s clear she’s doing it more out of loyalty toward Dale. When Randall isn’t killed, Andrea goes to tell Dale, and is devastated when he’s killed by a zombie.
Andrea thinks it’s ridiculous that she’s asked to essentially babysit Shane, but agrees to keep an eye out on everything. She and Glenn work on the RV and talk about Dale. Glenn says he let Dale down but Andrea says he was proud of the younger man.
During the farm attack, Andrea saves Carol’s life, but is left behind when she falls down and the others think she’s been killed. She’s forced to survive on her own and runs through the woods for hours on end, taking out some random zombies as she goes. Andrea runs out of ammo and it looks like the end for her, but then a mysterious figure appears and saves her.
Season 3
Andrea considers herself a liability for Michonne and tells Michonne to just leave her behind, but she refuses. When she and Michonne end up at Woodbury, Andrea wants to leave right away even though they’ve given her medicine. However, after talking to The Governor and seeing more of Woodbury, she becomes more inclined to stay, wanting a secure place to live. Andrea gives Merle a map and tells him where the farm was so that he can try to find Daryl. She keeps delaying the idea of leaving, telling Michonne that they can go whenever they want. Andrea is curious as to why the Governor keeps zombies around, but she still confronts Michonne about her attitude and actions. Even when it means going against Michonne, she decides to stay, wishing Michonne would stay too.
Andrea is initially horrified by the gladiator battle taking place, but later admits that she understands the point of it all, especially since the zombies’ teeth were removed. She then tells the Governor that she wants to contribute to the community. The two of them hook up. Andrea helps Milton with his experiment, although she knows it’s pointless considering she knows from scientific evidence that zombies are no longer who they once were. Andrea wants to help fight during the battle in Woodbury, but reluctantly agrees to make sure everyone else is safe instead. She then stops Michonne from killing the Governor and is confused by the zombie heads in his aquarium and the fact that he’d kept his daughter “alive”. However, she still comforts him over his wound and buys his story.
She’s shocked when the Governor sets up a fight between Merle and Daryl. Andrea tries to quell the chaos happening in Woodbury by the scared citizens and the dangerous henchmen of the Governor after being attacked. When there are a few zombies inside the town and a man is bitten, Andrea tries to help, but is disturbed by the Governor casually coming by and shooting him in the head.
Andrea argues with him that he needs to talk down the people of Woodbury, but he wants nothing to do with it, and she learns about Glenn and Maggie and the rest of her friends being alive. Andrea gives a speech to the citizens to try to calm them down, and it seems to work. She gets upset when she learns about the Governor going to the prison. She decides to go visit them herself despite him telling her she can stay there if she does. She tells Milton about it and asks him to help her sneak out, and not to say anything. She continues on to the prison alone after coming across Tyreese’s group.
Andrea is taken aback by the hostile welcome she receives from the prison group, but she’s glad to see everyone who’s still alive, and sad about Lori and Shane. She genuinely wants nobody else to die, but they’re willing to go to war with Woodbury. Andrea is upset at Michonne for whatever she told them, which is when Michonne tells her the truth about the Governor, like how he sent Merle after her. Andrea is a bit overwhelmed by all of the information, and by Carol telling her to kill the Governor in his sleep. When she gets back to Woodbury, she tells the Governor about her going there. She sleeps with him and then almost carries out Carol’s plan, but is unable to.
Andrea sets up a meeting and tries to convince both him and Rick to stand down. She’s kicked out of the building by both of them. Because of something Rick said, Andrea asks Hershel what happened to Maggie. Hershel responds by saying he’s a sick man, and although she doesn’t know the specifics of what that means, she knows it’s not good. Even though she goes back to Woodbury and tells the Governor that she hopes whatever deal he came up with works out, she’s clearly less convinced by him than ever.
When she sees his torture room, she almost shoots him but is stopped by Milton. Andrea then leaves Woodbury to go inform Rick and the others of what’s happening. She’s forced to not only survive against zombies, but run from the Governor, who’s chasing her. Andrea makes it to the prison, but before Rick sees her, she’s captured by the Governor, and winds up in his torture chamber.
She is forced to watch Milton slowly die while trying to free herself from her restraints. When he asks why she didn’t go back to her friends, Andrea says that she just wanted to save everyone. She’s able to break free and kill the zombified Milton but not before he bites her. When Rick, Daryl, and Michonne find her, she’s happy to hear that everyone else is still alive. She says that no one can make it alone. Andrea takes Rick’s gun and shoots herself in the head.
Comic Differences
Andrea is one of only a few of the original group to still be alive in the comics. Despite some instances scattered throughout the first three seasons, Andrea was never as well received in the show as she always has been in the comics, mostly attributed to her utter ignorance in regard to The Governor in S3.
While she does become depressed after having to shoot her sister in the head when Amy is bitten and killed, Andrea never tries to kill herself.
Andrea becomes proficient at shooting and more of a leader as time goes on, becoming one of the most valuable members of the group.
She helps clear out the prison when the group finds it. Andrea receives a knife wound on her face and an injured ear when Thomas, a dangerous prisoner, attacks her. He’s killed soon after.
She forms a relationship with Dale, and the two of them make the commitment to take care of two twin boys after their parents are killed. She also considers leaving with them to try to find a safer place to live.
Andrea is never in Woodbury. She stays at the prison while Rick, Glenn, and Michonne are there, and she helps keep things together. When preparing for an attack from the town, she helps train others with firearms. During the confrontation, Andrea uses a sniper rifle to take out some of the enemies. Even though she’s hit by a bullet in her head/face, it only temporarily knocks her out, and she’s back to fighting when she comes to.
Andrea, Dale, Maggie, Glenn, Sophia, and the twin boys leave in the RV before another attack takes place. However, she comes back by herself to help out when it happens again. She kills some of the Woodbury people but is also injured.
Eventually, Andrea loses both twin boys and Dale. Wherever she and the other survivors go, Andrea is a very important part of keeping people alive, especially with her shooting skills. She and Rick end up developing a romantic relationship.
