The Death Scène
Juliet is lying in the church, it seems for Romeo that she’s dead. But she isn’t, she took a medicine and she felt in a deep cold sleep. Romeo arrives in the church and finds her. He thinks she is dead and he’s so upset that he drinks the poison. Juliet wakes up but can’t stop Romeo drinking the poison. It’s too late when Romeo finds out that Juliet is still alive. Romeo dies in Juliet’s arms. Juliet is so upset that she kills herself with a gun. |
Romeo thinks Juliet is death and he goes to the church garden where the Capulet’s vault is. There Romeo sees Paris and they start to fight. It is Romeo who kills Paris. Paris: Oh, I’m dying! If you want to be kind, open the vault. Put my body next to Juliet’s. (He dies.) Romeo: Yes, I will. Who is this young man? (looking at him in surprise) It’s Mercutio’s relative, the noble Paris! What did my servant tell me on the way here? Didn’t he say that Paris wanted to marry Juliet? Or did I dream that? Or am I going crazy? (taking Paris’s hand) Oh give me your hand – you, a man as unlucky as I am. I’ll put you in a fine grave. (He opens the vault and sees Juliet’s body.) Here lies Juliet. She’s so lovely. She fills this dark vault with light. ( he places Paris’s body in the vault, then goes to Juliet.) Oh, my love, my wife! There’s still some colour in your lovely face. ( He sees Tybalt’s body in the vault.) Ah, Tybalt, are you lying there in your bloody clothes? I was the one who killed you. Now I’m going to kill myself. Forgive me, cousin! Ah, dear Juliet, why are you still so lovely? Eyes, look at Juliet for the last time! (putting his arms round her) Arms, hold her for the last time! (kissing her) And mouth, kiss her for the last time. Now, it’s time for me to kill myself. (he takes out the bottle of poison. It(s very quick. (He kisses Juliets hand.) So, with a kiss, I die. (He falls to the ground and dies.) The Friar comes in the vault and Juliet begins to move and waking up. Juliet: Oh, dear Friar! Where’s Romeo? I’m in the right place. But where’s my Romeo? Friar (afraid): I hear a noise. Lady, come away from this place of death. Everything had gone wrong. Your husband lied death an Paris too. Don’t stay to ask questions. The guards are coming. (trying to pull Juliet with him) Come away, dear Juliet. I’m afraid to stay here. Juliet (pushing him away): Go then! I’m not going to leave this place. (The Friar goes out. Juliet sees Romeo’s body on the ground. She falls on him and finds the bottle in his hand.) What’s this bottle in my true love’s hand? (She smells it.) Poison! So that’s how he died. Oh, my Romeo, haven’t you left any for me? I’ll kiss your mouth. Perhaps there’s still some poison on it. Then I can taste it and join you in death. (She kisses him.) Your mouth is still warm! The guards are coming into the vault. Juliet: Do I hear a noise? Then I’ll be quick. (She sees Romeo’s knife and picks it up.) Oh, friendly knife! My body will be your final resting-place. (She pushes the knife into her body and falls dead.) |
