Even though Stardew Valley is a farm simulator, there’s plenty more to do, from fishing to mining to making friends with the locals. One of the fun things you can do is make crafts, which is a great way to make a big profit. One of the best handmade items to make is Caviar, which sells for a pretty high price.
It’s very simple: all you need is a Fish Pond, some Sturgeon and some Storage Jars. Here’s everything you need to know about starting your Caviar empire (or just producing some here and there).
Updated March 8, 2023 by Rebecca Phillips: Stardew Valley is as popular as ever, and making Caviar is a great way to stock up on gifts the townspeople will love. We’ve updated this guide for clarity so you can start making caviar easily.

What is caviar?
Caviar is one of the many crafts available in the game. Like Jam and Pickles, Caviar is made with a Preservation Jar. However, unlike Jams and Pickles, you don’t use fruits and vegetables to make Caviar. Instead, you’ll need the Sturgeon Roe.
This item is obtained from Sturgeon in the Fish Pond, a farm building that was added in update 1.4.
How is caviar used?
Profit
Caviar isn’t used in any quest, but there are several other uses for it. Caviar sells for 500g per jar, or 700g if you have a Craft, which is a great thing to sell if you want to make a lot of money.
To complete the missing package
You can use Caviar for the Missing Package, if you go the Community Center route instead of siding with Joja. After completing the Community Center, you will soon have access to the Missing Pack, which is tasked with finding and donating a number of rare and expensive items, one of which is the Caviar. There are six items you can donate and five slots to fill, so you don’t demand to give Caviar, but that’s an option.
To Make a Fashion Hat
If you are someone who likes to change the look of your character in Stardew Valley, you can also use Caviar to make a Fashion Hat. This fancy headwear is a black-rimmed figure with a cute feather inside. Just combine a batch of Caviar with some Fabric at Emily’s Home Sewing Machine (or one on your farm, if you got it from the respective Special Orders).
As gifts for NPCs
Basically, everyone in Stardew Valley loves crafts. While they all have different tastes with their favorite gifts and things they can’t stand, if you just want to give some townsfolk a gift they’ll love to strengthen the bond your system, handcrafted items like Wine, Cheese, and yes, even Caviar are a good choice. You will get 45 friendship points with that person for giving it to them.
Caviar is a gift ‘liked’ by everyone in Pelican Town, with the exception of Jas, Sebastian and Vincent. These three hate it and you will lose friendship points with them if you give it to them.
How to Make Caviar
To make caviar, you need to harvest Sturgeon Caviar from the Fish Pond, then place it in the Storage Jar.
Build a fish pond
To build a fish pond, you will need:
- Green algae x5
- Seaweed x5
- Stone x200
- 5,000 gold
Once you have these, head over to Robin’s Carpenter Shop. She will build you a Fish Pond anywhere you want on her farm. They are the size of five bricks and can move around like most other farm buildings. It will take her two days to build.
You can mark which fish are in the pond by placing a mark on it.
Next, we will catch the very fish that we want to display on that sign.
Catching sturgeon
Sturgeons aren’t the hardest fish to catch in Stardew Valley, but they aren’t the easiest. In essence, they are not too difficult to find, but attracting them can be quite a task.
You can only find Sturgeon in Mountain Lake, but you can find them in two seasons: Summer and Winter. They can appear between 6am and 7pm, so you’ll want to make sure you’re fishing during that time.
Place yourself on the island in the middle of the lake and throw as far from the shore as possible – your chances are better this way. You can still catch them near the shore, but the further you go, the easier it is to find them.
The weather doesn’t matter, as they can be caught in any weather. However, Summer rain gives the highest chance, and Winter rain gives the lowest chance — though this shouldn’t matter too much, as rain can only occur in Winter using Rain Totem.
After catching a Sturgeon, the hard part begins. They are difficult to spin, but not impossible. Consider eating one of the many dishes that will enhance your Fishing skills or use a lure to make the process easier, such as Cork Bobber, which increases the size of your rod.
If you’re really having trouble catching sturgeon, don’t worry. You can also buy them from Krobus. Every Wednesday, he will drop a Magnet or one of ten different types of fish. One of the possibilities is Sturgeon, and he will have five for 200g each.
Fish pond mechanics
Place a fish in the pond, it will start producing items, including Caviar. Fish will spawn, then claim an item (or items) at a certain population threshold. The population cannot increase until you bring the requested item(s). At different population thresholds, what fish can produce will also vary.
Unlike other fish, Sturgeon will only produce Caviar. It could be a day or two, but that’s the only thing they’ll do.
Here are the items your Sturgeon may require:
Sturgeon Numbers |
Request can |
first |
Diamond |
3 |
jelly jar |
2 jars of maple syrup |
|
Pickle jar |
|
5 |
3 Hollows Omni |
7 |
Nautilus shell |
Sturgeons will spawn every four days, but when you complete their request, it resets the counter to 0. So if there’s one more day left for them to spawn, but you completed the request, then it will take another four days for you to get a new Sturgeon.
Harvesting and processing caviar
Once your Sturgeon has produced some Caviar, you can collect it like any other item by interacting with the Fish Pond. Then just put it in a storage jar. It will turn into Caviar after 6,000 in-game minutes or four in-game days.
Sturgeon is the only fish that can produce caviar suitable for Caviar. You can still get Caviar from most other fishes through the same process, but it will turn into Old Caviar, not Caviar, once it is placed in the Storage Jar.
