A sequel to the Shaman King anime has just been confirmed in Japan, despite fans on Netflix still waiting for the final set of episodes to release.
In the past, anime fans either had to watch a series as a weekly simulcast or wait for the entire show to have finished its broadcast until the entire season was released on Netflix.
However, the streaming giant had shown in 2021 a new way to broadcast the latest anime titles: airing smaller parts of a wider series through clusters of episodes as micro-releases.
However, series are still struggling to keep up with the domestic release of anime shows in Japan. This week, domestic audiences were delighted to hear that a Shaman King sequel is in the works, whilst fans outside Japan are still waiting for the final block of episodes.

Shaman King sequel announced in Japan
Today, April 21st, the final episode from Shaman King season 1, number 52, was broadcast in Japan on the TXN (TV Tokyo) channel.
Then, only a few minutes after the domestic broadcast concluded, the official Japanese website for the Shaman King reboot confirmed that a sequel anime project was in the works!
In a press statement via the website, the team reported that after “The final episode of the TV anime “SHAMAN KING”. The sequel to this work has been decided!”
Fans should note that the upcoming sequel will not be a second season of the 2021 Shaman King reboot because season 1 of the recent re-adaptation adapted all 35 volumes of the original manga series by Hiroyuki Takei.
However, the announcement did include a mention that the sequel will instead focus on Hana, indicating that the sequel will adapt the Shaman King: Flowers spin off series.
“In the sequel, the story is spun around the leaves and Anna’s son, Hana. The sequel production decision SPOT that gives a glimpse of the situation is released! Not only the flowers, but also the appearance that seems to be a new character is drawn, and it is finished in a promising image.” – Shamanking–project-com.
Unfortunately, a targeted release date for the Shaman King sequel was not revealed. However, a special teaser video was shared online alongside the announcement, see below:
“The popular comic “SHAMAN KING” by Hiroyuki Takei, who has sold over 38 million copies in the series. With the final episode of the TV anime, the sequel will be produced! It is a video that gives a glimpse of the sequel in which the story is spun, centered on the leaves and Anna’s son, Hana!” – Shaman King SPOT, via King Amusement Creative YouTube.

Netflix release is still lagging behind the domestic run
Despite all 52 episodes of Shaman King having been released in Japan, the international launch through Netflix is still lagging slightly behind. At the time of writing, only 38 of those 52 total episodes have been released on Netflix, with batches of new content dropping every few months.
Whilst a specific release date for the remaining 14 episodes have not been revealed, the platform is currently labelling those new episodes as “coming soon.”
It remains unclear whether Netflix will also purchase the international distribution rights for the recently announced Shaman King sequel. This is because, unfortunately, the 2021 Shaman King reboot has received a decidedly mixed reaction from fans watching from around the world.
In fact, the series is scoring a 6.99/10 on MyAnimeList and 7.1/10 on IMDB – significantly lower than the original series, which scored a 7.76/10 and 8.1/10 respectively.
Despite these underwhelming ratings, the majority of reviews from fans of the series are more positive, with the second top-rated critique on MAL calling Shaman King ‘anime of the year.’ However, reviews from media outlets are of a similar sentiment to the ratings, with Gamerant scoring 3/5, a mediocre 5/10 on IGN and a C- from Anime News Network.
Whilst the news of a Shaman King sequel is welcomed by the global community, we will have to wait and see whether Netflix consider the anime as popular enough to merit the cost of acquiring the streaming rights.
