Fans of McDonald’s french fries in Malaysia will not like the news that the mega fast food chain is halting the sales of large fries for the time being.
On January 24, 2022, the brand’s social media accounts announced that it would be taking off large-size fries and set meals effective from the day itself.
“We are facing a fry-tening supply crunch on French Fries,” the brand said. “But fret not. While you can’t Go Large for the time being, you can still enjoy your favorite meals and fries in Medium size.”
“Time fries… It’ll be back before you know it.”
The shortage of fries mirrors the situation in Japan where McDonald’s has also been forced to reduce its french fry options down to only small-sized servings, citing the current global potato shortage as the main cause.
While seemingly straightforward, the global potato shortage has been blamed on a myriad of reasons, including the discovery of potato wart fungus in Canada and extreme weather conditions in South Africa for example.
These various complications coupled with supply chain disruptions brought on by the pandemic have ensured a potato supply scarcity that has lasted longer than expected.
Evidently, the shortage has now affected the supply chain of McDonald’s Malaysia, with there being no confirmed date as to when large-sized fries will return to the menu.
Hopefully, the shortage doesn’t proceed to affect other menu items such as breakfast hash browns or the seasonal Curly Fries that typically accompany the brand’s Prosperity Burger options.
Because that would be absolutely catastrophic for those among us who love to indulge in a “Mekdi” meal every now and then.
