- 9 Legendary and Mythical Dark-type Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Arceus
Introduced in Generation II mainly to combat the power of Psychic-type Pokémon, Dark-type Pokémon remain good choices to add to your team with their generally good defense and special attacks. They are the best counter to Psychic- and Ghost-types, manly because Dark-type Pokémon are immune to Psychic-type attacks.
Below, you will find a list of of the best Dark-type Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. There are a few important notes to keep in mind when viewing this list. Firstly, while these lists usually don’t include the starter’s line, because of the lack of Dark-type Pokemon, this list includes Oshawott’s final evolution, but will still not include any Legendary and Mythical Pokémon. Secondly, each Pokémon on this list has at least a Base Stats Total of 479, a little low to account for the Dark-types available. Thirdly, secondary type (if any) matters when considering any added weaknesses.
1. Hisuian Samurott (Base Stats Total: 528)
The final evolution of Oshawott in Arceus, Hisuian Samruott is a dual Water- and Dark-type that just beats Umbreon for the highest Base Stats Total of all Dark-types in the game.
Hisuian Samruott is well-balanced save for one stat (Special Defense at 65). It has Attack of 108 and Special Attack of 100. Samurott has 90 in HP, 85 in Speed, and 80 in Defense. It’s a strong attacker with good defense and speed, but susceptible to special attacks; good thing its weaknesses use mainly physical attacks.
Hisuian Samurott learns attacks such as Aqua Jet, Water Pulse, Ceaseless Edge, and Dark Pulse. It can learn through move tutors attacks such as Ice Beam, Megahorn, Aerial Ace, Iron Tail, Poison Jab, and Psycho Cut, the latter four covering a few weaknesses.
Samurott is weak to Electric, Grass, Fighting, Bug, and Fairy. Offensively, its typing is super effective against Fire, Ground, Rock, Psychic, and Ghost.
Samurott can be found only in Space-Time Distortions, the only way to obtain it if you didn’t select Oshawott as your starter and haven’t traded. Oshawott can be found in the same location if the same conditions apply.
2. Umbreon (Base Stats Total: 525)
Umbreon continues the pattern of applicable Eeveelutions making these lists. The pure Dark-type is a great tank who provides a bit more speed and offensive power than many Pokémon of the other type introduced with it in Generation II, Steel.
As a tank, Umbreon’s best stats are its Special Defense (130) and Defense (110). It has high HP as well at 95. Its Attack and Speed are both 65 with Special Attack lower at 60.
Umbreon learns moves such as Snarl, Swift, Dark Pulse, and Double-Edge. It can learn Hyper Beam, Shadow Ball, Rock Smash, and Iron Tail.
As a pure Dark-type, Umbreon is weak to Fighting, Bug, and Fairy along with its immunity to Psychic attacks. Teaching it Iron Tail will cover the Fairy weakness, though it only has a 75 accuracy; be cautious! Offensively, Umbreon’s typing is super effective against Psychic and Ghost.
Umbreon can be found in Space-Time Distortions. If you want to evolve one from an Eevee, Eevee can be found in the Horseshoe Plains. However, it is very skittish and will run away as soon as it notices you! It will evolve into Umbreon when you trigger its evolution with high friendship at nighttime.
3. Overqwil (Base Stats Total: 510)
The Hisuian exclusive and evolution of Hisuian Qwilfish, Overqwil can be a fearsome addition to your team thanks to its typing and balanced Base Stats Total. It takes the bronze spot over Weavile thanks to having far fewer weaknesses.
The Dark- and Poison-type Pokémon favors the physical with Attack at 115 and Defense at 95. It has good HP and Speed, both at 85. Special Attack and Special Defense are both 85. The 30-point difference between its highest and lowest Base Stat is an indication of its balanced build.
Overqwil’s move set does favor physical attacks as it learns Barb Barrage, Poison Jab, Aqua Tail, and Self-Destruct, among others including special attack Dark Pulse. It can also learn Giga Impact, Shadow Ball, and Ice Ball. It also has the added benefit of being able to inflict poison.
Thanks to its typing, Overqwil is only weak to Ground. Moves it learns like Aqua Tail and Water Pulse, or are taught like Ice Ball or Ice Beam, cover its sole weakness easily. Offensively, Overqwil’s typing is super effective Psychic, Ghost, Grass, and Fairy.
Overqwil can be found at Lake Valor. If you want to evolve one from a Hisuian Qwilfish, they can be found at Islespy Shore, Lunker’s Lair, Ramanas Island, and Tranquility Cave. To evolve, Qwilfish must perform Strong Style Barb Barrage 20 times.
4. Weavile (Base Stats Total: 510)
Not to be confused with its Hisui predecessor Sneasler, Weavile is a good addition if you’re able to work around its weaknesses.
Weavile hits fast and hard. Its Speed is 125 and Attack 120. It has good Special Defense at 85, but HP is 70, Defense 65, and Special Defense a meager 45. Weavile is not built for prolonged battles.
Weavile learns Ice Shard, Slash, Poison Jab, Night Slash, and Blizzard in addition to Swords Dance to raise its already high Attack. It can learn Aerial Ace, Ice Punch, Iron Tail, Psycho Cut, Shadow Claw, and X-Scissor.
Weavile is a dual Dark- and Ice-type Pokémon. It is weak to Rock, Bug, Steel, Fire, and Fairy, but holds a devastating double weakness to Fighting that its high Special Defense will generally be useless against as Fighting-types generally favor physical attacks. Offensively, Weavile’s typing is super effective against Psychic, Ghost, Ground, Flying, Grass, and Dragon.
You can find Weavile in Space-Time Distortions. If you want to evolve one from a Johtonian Sneasel, those can be found in the same location. To evolve into Weavile, give Sneasel a Razor Claw at nighttime.
5. Honchkrow (Base Stats Total: 505)
The Dark- and Flying-type Honckrow is an offensive specialist and could be a good choice if the other Flying-types in the game don’t interest you.
Honchkrow’s Attack is 125, Special Attack 105, and HP 100. It has decent Speed at 71, but its Defense and Special Defense are 52, making that high HP pool a bit moot because of its low defensive stats.
Honchkrow learns moves such as Aerial Ace, Night Slash, Dark Pulse, and Brave Bird. It can also learn Hyper Beam, Icy Wind, Shadow Ball, and Psychic.
Honchkrow is weak to Rock, Electric, Ice, and Fairy with its weaknesses to Bug and Fighting reverted to normal damage. As a Flying-type, it holds an immunity to Ground in addition to being immune to Psychic. Offensively, Honckrow’s typing is super effective against Psychic, Ghost, Grass, Bug, and Fighting.
You can find Honchkrow at Bather’s Lagoon and Cloudpool Ridge. If you want to evolve one from a Murkrow, those can be found at Cloudpool Ridge, Crossing Slope, Hideaway Bay, Islespy Shore, and Veilstone Cape. Use a Dusk Stone to evolve Murkrow.
6. Drapion (Base Stats Total: 500)
Drapion is another balanced addition to this list, though not as balanced as Overqwil. Still, Drapion could be your choice if between the two if you want one that is a little faster to attack.
Drapion’s Defense is 100, Speed 95, and Attack 90. Its Special Defense is 75, HP 70, and Special Attack 60. Drapion is built for physical battles.
The Poison- and Dark-type Pokémon learns Bite, Cross Poison, X-Scissor, and Crunch. It can also learn Poison Jab, Thunder Fang, Fire Fang, Ice Fang, and Aqua Tail, among others.
Drapion is just like Overqwil: only weak to Ground. Moves it is taught like Ice Fang or Aqua Tail cover its sole weakness easily. Offensively, Drapion’s typing is super effective Psychic, Ghost, Grass, and Fairy.
Drapion can be found at Gingko Landing. If you want to evolve a Skorupi, those can be found at Gingko Landing and Castaway Shore.
7. Spiritomb (Base Stats Total: 485)
The Forbidden Pokémon appears on this list as the only non-evolved Pokémon, and also the one that will be most cumbersome to obtain.
Spriitomb forgoes HP (50) and Speed (35) to focus on offense and defense. Its Defense and Special Defense are 108, and its Attack and Special Attack are 92. While slow, it should be able to withstand both physical and special attacks before unleashing its own.
Spiritomb learns Shadow Sneak, Hex, Extrasensory, Dark Pulse, and Shadow Ball. The Ghost- and Dark-type can also learn Hyper Beam, Ice Wind, Psychic, Snarl, and Water Pulse.
Spiritomb has only one weakness: Fairy. Before the introduction of Fairy-types, Spiritomb – like Sableye – had no weaknesses. Spiritomb is also immune to Normal and Fighting unless an identifying move is used first. However, the same applies to Spiritomb’s Ghost-type attacks. Offensively, Spiritomb’s typing is super effective against Psychic and Ghost.
You can only obtain Spiritomb by completing Request 22, Eerie Apparitions in the Night. You will be tasked with retrieving 107 purple wisps during the night all around Hisui. After, you’ll be directed to number 108, the Odd Keystone, in the Crimson Mirelands. A level 60 Spiritomb will then appear. Make sure to save your game before approaching the Odd Keystone!
8. Sukntank (Base Stats Total: 479)
Another on this list that is also Poison-type, Skuntank is another balanced Dark-type though with the lowest base stats of the type in Arceus.
Skuntank’s HP is 103 and Attack 93. Its Speed is good at 84 with Special Attack at 71, Defense at 67, and Special Defense at 61. The low defense leaves a bit to be desired.
Skuntakn learns Venoshock, Night Slash, Flamethrower, and Poison Jab. It can also learn Iron Tail, Shadow Claw, Snarl, and Play Rough.
Skuntank, like the others of its typing on this list, is only weak to Ground. However, unlike the other two on this list, Skuntank does not and cannot learn any moves to counter Ground. Offensively, its typing is super effective against Psychic, Ghost, Grass, and Fairy.
Skuntank can be found at Ancient Quarry and Scarlet Bog. If you want to evolve a Stunky, those can be found at the same locations.
