The answer to all four questions is one and the same: The Isley Brothers.
Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2022, the Ohio-bred group first gained attention with its ebullient 1959 hit, “Shout.” That song took on new life when it was a centerpiece of the 1978 movie, “Animal House,” and was later sampled on records by Michael Jackson and De La Soul.
The Beatles’ 1963 debut album included a reverent cover version of the Isleys’ 1962 hit, “Twist and Shout,” and the Fab Four also covered “Shout.” Subsequent classic records by the Isleys followed, including 1965’s “This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You),” 1969’s “It’s Your Thing,” 1973’s “That Lady,” “Fight the Power” and “For the Love of You” (both in 1975) and 2002’s “Contagious.”
Three of the brothers are deceased, but 81-year-old singer Ronald Isley and 70-year-old guitarist Ernie Isley are still on the road performing.
In 2017, they teamed up with Santana to make a joint album, “Power of Peace.” Last fall saw the release of the Isleys’ 32nd album, “Make Me Say It Again, Girl,” which features guest appearances by Beyoncé, Earth, Wind & Fire, Snoop Dogg and more.

The Jungle Brothers, with Tulengua
The Jungle Brothers emerged in the late 1980s as leaders of the same New York-based Native Tongues hip-hop movement that yielded A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah, De La Soul, Monie Love and Black Sheep.
Drawing equally from jazz, house music, Afrocentrism and funk, the Jungle Brothers favored socially conscious lyrics that contrasted with the braggadocio then favored by many rappers.
In 2020, the influential but under-sung group released “Keep It Jungle,” its first new album in 15 years. If memory serves, the Jungle Brothers have never performed in San Diego before, making their gig here this weekend a long overdue debut.

The Lone Bellow, with Tall Heights
Released in 2022, The Lone Bellow’s “Love Songs for Losers” boasts one of the best album titles in recent memory. It’s the fifth album to date by this Nashville-based trio, whose members all hail from the south but joined forces in Brooklyn.
Steeped in folk, country, bluegrass, soul and gospel, their music spotlights the close vocal harmonies of Brian Elmquist, Zach Williams and Kanene Pipkin. They recorded their new album in Nashville at the home studio of the late Roy Orbison, whose haunted love songs are clearly an inspiration to The Lonesome Bellow’s members.
While songs of bruised hearts and understated optimism are the group’s calling cards, their 2022 song, “Gold,” cogently essays the downward spiral that occurs when fading small-town dreams collide with drug addiction.
