A Vampire Storm *Primer*

Wow those are some good questions let me do my best to answer them. Yes I have an integrated list so I enjoy having the ability to have the option to do either strategy in a game. A more dedicated list is going to be marginally better but because the storm strategy only needs you to play Mana Echoes and Phyrexian Altar you do not really do anything that negatively impacts the aggressive gameplan.
I have had no problems playing Urza’s Saga in this list my mana base is very good even without all the dual lands (I only have scrubland) The way to see urza’s saga is a very versatile tutor that gives access to mana in sol ring if you really need it or Skullclamp and Sensei’s Divining Top which are excellent combo pieces.
Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord is good because my list has a few higher mana value vampires in the deck and cheating them into play is worth losing the vampire token in many cases. Additionally having the flexibility of gaining life and getting some attacking power or having a recurring removal spell are both quite good tools to have.
Scion of Opulence I have found actually carries it’s weight very well. Helps out the storm lines if you do not have Phyrexian Altar yet by recouping colored mana in the storm lines. In aggro lines you can sac for mana in a pinch if you need to use a protection spell to save your board. A 3/1 body is also not bad for 3 mana to be aggressive with, and it is really great with Bloodghast so overall good card in my experience.
Signets are roughly as strong as talismans but the main advantage is that if you are going for the storm with just Mana Echoes and Skullclamp you can hit the signets off the draws and you can filter colorless off of Mana Echoes into more colored mana than what you get with the talismans.
Mavren Fein, Dusk Apostle is ok he is in a vampire flex slot and I will frequently cut him for access to different vampires, he doesn’t trigger off tokens but you usually have a nontoken vampire that is attacking. Even though his stats aren’t great you usually have a lot of lords and sac outlets you want to use so the bodies are useful for both those occasions
Right now would admit Butcher of Malakir is on this list for fun he probably isn’t that good especially if you are curving out with an aggro strategy. Bloodline necromancer however is good because you have great ETBs that you can recur in this deck in Champion of Dusk and Malakir Bloodwitch.
Shared Animosity is very good and definitely playable I’m only not playing it because it is not useful if you are storming off. Idol of Oblivion is too slow, and if I need card draw I will get Necropotence or Skullclamp as much stronger options. Protection spells are definitely better in more aggressive list but I play reanimator spells because they are strong with both strategies. I can sac my board for value in storm and then bring all the creatures back to net value, and also mass reanimation lets me spend all of my mana every turn and does not require me to hold up mana if I am worried about a board wipe. Though again I think you want to play a critical mass of protection spells in aggro of 5-7.
Thanks for the input and was nice to be able to engage with you

Apollo_Paladin I’ve seen your suggestions and I appreciate them very much! I’m very new into magic and I inherited some cards, so I got curious and got into it, but my knowledge is very limited.
I found what I think are two main weaknesses of the deck: The first one is that I don’t think I don’t take advantage of white color in my deck so much, so your suggestion of Unbreakable Formation and Rally the Ranks comes in handy! The second one is that the mana cost of my cards is imbalanced, and I need to remove some pricey cards in favor of other cards like Legion Lieutenant (as you suggested), Gifted Aetherborn or some Vampire Cutthroat.
Also, I decided to add in Champion of Dusk as I definitely prefer it over Sanctum Seeker or Bloodlord of Vaasgoth. Added the two missing Mavren Fein, Dusk Apostle as well. Aand finally I listened to you and added Infernal Grasp instead of Walk the Plank, as it is super easy to purchase, like every other card you suggested!
I won’t think of it as a critique! Just the opposite, you helped me so much and I’m very thankful for that 🙂

Edgar typically doesn’t need many artifacts. Ideally your vamps should be mostly 1-2 mana anyway. The only artifact I’d say you absolutely NEED is Skullclamp as vamps tend to play their entire hand very early and you have plenty of 1/1s to sacrifice to reload your hand. If you don’t have the budget for Stoneforge Mystic (I assume this is budget due to the lack of utility lands) then I’d suggest Steelshaper’s Gift and/or Open the Armory or just ordinary tutors like Demonic Tutor , Diabolic Intent , Vampiric Tutor , Enlightened Tutor and so on.
Your vampires actually seem to be pretty high-costed. For Edgar decks, it’s pretty common to see upwards of 30 1-2 mana creatures and 40-46 or so creatures total.
I’m a big fan of Mavren Fein, Dusk Apostle , Shared Animosity , Mirror Entity and Obelisk of Urd in vamps, along with optional tech in the form of Goblin Bombardment and Impact Tremors , also Nameless Inversion counts as casting a vampire spell, funny enough.
Best of luck, building on a budget can be tough.

darthpaul74 mmm ok. Call to the Feast would generate vampire tokens so would Mavren Fein, Dusk Apostle although he might be a bit slower. That way you can keep from having non-vampire cards while still having backups till getting Elenda, the Dusk Rose if that interests you.

I think the deck is very good but I see the potential for it to be that little bit better by honing in a little more on what you want your deck identity to be, Allow me to explain.
On the one hand, you run cards such as Vicious Conquistador , Pulse Tracker , Skymarcher Aspirant , Universal Automaton , Vampire Cutthroat , Vampire of the Dire Moon , these are all good cards in an Edgar Markov deck focused on trying to kill the table as fast as possible but with all the aristocrats you have, they are at best, 2 bodies for one mana. If you are trying to go for an aristocrats strategy Elenda, the Dusk Rose , Mavren Fein, Dusk Apostle , Bloodline Keeper Flip, Living Death , and Patriarch’s Bidding , Blade of the Bloodchief are all going to give you significantly more bang for your buck in an aristocrats strategy
On the other is your many many aristocrat’s pieces which I know can be good in an aggressive strategy, but these aristocrat cards are harder to justify when you have plenty of vampires in your deck that say, “I’m not a very good card, but I can kill you really fast if I build momentum.” I think aggressive choices can be very much so be justified if the card itself is a very high-quality card.
Also quick side note why is
Sphere of Safety
in your deck? seems very unnecessary considering your playing go, wide aristocrats,
Edgar Markov
But yeah I like the deck especially the fact that you recognize that just because your playing Mardu doesn’t mean 15% of your deck should be removal spells. I have my own list that you can check out at this link where yes I also do try to balance two strategies at once but I think that my deck makes it work since most of the cards in the deck are not only great in there intended role but pretty good at getting the other job done.

Since you have a lot of the ping life type guys like Blood Artist and such, I’m surprised you aren’t running the Sanguine Bond and Exquisite Blood combo.
Also you are missing some other good lords and tribal vamp stuff like Bloodline Keeper Flip Bloodlord of Vaasgoth Champion of Dusk Elenda, the Dusk Rose Falkenrath Gorger Forerunner of the Legion Indulgent Aristocrat Kalastria Highborn Legion Lieutenant Legion’s Landing Flip Malakir Bloodwitch Mavren Fein, Dusk Apostle New Blood Olivia, Mobilized for War Olivia’s Bloodsworn Feast of Blood Patron of the Vein Sanctum Seeker Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord Stensia Banquet Stensia Masquerade Thirsting Bloodlord Urge to Feed Vampire Nocturnus Vampiric Fury
ok way more suggestions than I expected, but all good cards to consider! Obviously don’t need all of them, it depends on your strategy and what you want to focus on. I would very highly recommend at least Bloodwitch, Mavren Fein, Sanctum Seeker, and probably Legion Lieutenant and Landing for good cheap value on the low end. There’s a lot you can get into if you want to mess with madness strategies, or focus on lifegain type stuff and exsanguinate. Like typically you would run Cabal Coffers and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth for an exsanguinate wincon, among other things. There are other Sorins you can dabble in if you want, but Imperious Bloodlord is probably the most value at 3 CMC and has strong synergy for straight vamp strategies.

Its hard to recommend many cards since you didn’t purchase any new ones and you said you want the theme to be vampire tribal. That said, I would consider cutting the following cards: Bloodcrazed Paladin Champion of Dusk Disciple of Griselbrand Paladin of Atonement Priest of Forgotten Gods Wurmcoil Engine Zulaport Cutthroat Harsh Sustenance Consecrate / Consume Single Combat Culling Dais Seer’s Sundial Whispersilk Cloak Bastion of Remembrance
Cards to look at adding: Mind Stone/Fellwar stone/Worn Powerstone/any mana rocks Mavren Fein, Dusk Apostle Etchings of the Chosen Call to the Feast Bloodthirsty Aerialist Viscera Seer Vindictive Vampire Bishop of Binding Arvad the Cursed Despark Heliod’s Intervention Altar’s Reap Mace of the Valiant Well of Lost Dreams

Edgar Markov sacrifice theme
I enjoy the more sac themed vamps too. I find Edgar makes the aggro strategy so easy that if you actually lean into it, your deck starts entering not-fun territory. Moving into a theme like Sacrifice or Life Gain makes for more fun games, and because Edgar is so powerful, you can always fall back on aggro as a Plan B if you need to.
I’m still working on my own build, so it’s not finalized but here are some suggestions.
Dusk Legion Zealot – 2 bodies + draw a card for 2 mana is just too good to pass up. Sure he doesn’t do much, but it plays right into your sac theme.
Mavren Fein, Dusk Apostle – I would play him over some of your weaker aggro focused cards like Legion Lieutenant just because he makes more bodies to sac.
Champion of Dusk is one of your best top ends, with the number of vamps you run. Just to refill your hand.
Bloodline Keeper Flip – It’s no secret that he’s one of the best vampires in the business. Whether as a lord for aggro builds, or a token creator for sac-builds you’ll want one if you decide to keep the deck around.
Now for some non-vamp suggestions.
Teysa Karlov – She doubles death triggers and buffs your tokens, basically heavily supporting both of your main strategies.
Teysa, Orzhov Scion – Every black vampire token that edgar makes dies and is replaced by a spirit when this teysa is on the field. It lets your sac chains extend twice the norm. The exile clause is just gravy here.
Requiem Angel – A much higher CMC version of the Orzhov Scion Teysa, but possibly still worth playing because of how powerful the effect is.
Cards to consider removing:
As mentioned before, I don’t think Legion Lieutenant is worth keeping around. She’s perfectly fine in an aggro build, but since you’re trying to shift your primary strategy from aggro, then you want your remaining Lords to do more than just provide a buff.
Shadow Alley Denizen – I’d replace in a heart beat. Like Legion Lieutenant, she’s all about connecting with the enemy, when that isn’t your primary gameplan anymore.
Bloodlord of Vaasgoth – Now this is one I struggle with, because he’s definitely cuttable. You’re probably much better off with Champion of Dusk in this 5cmc slot, but Bloodlord is pretty cool, so I could understand holding on just out of fondness.
Falkenrath Aristocrat – The lack of humans really diminishes her strength here. We have much better and cheaper sac outlets and much stronger and cheaper attackers. This Aristocrat is just very medium, and easy to replace since she’s not performing at her best.
Anyway, that’s my take. Hope you have a blast with the deck.
