Kelly Clarkson has revealed why she didn’t actually want to win American Idol.
Clarkson surprised fans earlier this week by releasing two new songs to celebrate the release of her eighth studio album next month, but 15 years after her win, the singer is opening up about why she didn’t actually want to emerge as the champion of the talent show back in 2002.
And yes, it has to do with a certain contractual obligation the winner had to see through.
“I do remember Justin [Guarini] and I having the conversation before, and I was like, ‘I don’t want to win, I don’t want to win’, because we found out we had to do a movie,” Clarkson told EW.
“He really wanted to do a movie. And I really didn’t want to do a movie.
“I was like, ‘It would be really super cool if I got second and you got first, because the winner has to do the movie and the second one doesn’t.’”
Obviously, things didn’t work out as planned for Kelly and she won the series with over nine million votes, leading her on to starring in the not-so-hit movie From Justin to Kelly – which Justin Guarini ended up starring in anyway.
Nonetheless, during the interview, she did concede that winning the series offered her a unique entrance into the music industry.
“I got to showcase all these different sides of me,” she added. “Artists never get the opportunity to do that the first time out the gate.”
And it’s an opportunity she’s hoping to give new artists too when she joins The Voice US as a coach next year.
“It’s such a cool thing to have that leverage, to have an audience into you before you even have a record deal,” she said. “I want to give someone that opportunity.”
Kelly’s forthcoming soul album is called Meaning of Life and she’s previously described it as the album she wasn’t allowed to make after winning American Idol.
