Taping is a technique used by therapists to enhance muscle function, posture and movement patterns. Not only does taping provide muscular facilitation and postural enhancement, but it also increases joint proprioception and stability.
It has been suggested that kinesiology tape may only offer a placebo treatment effect; however, with experience many therapists have found its effectiveness in treating a variety musculoskeletal injuries.
Tape comes in a variety of strengths, making it suitable for a range of injuries. Kinesiology tape is thin and flexible, whereas strapping tape is less elastic and rigid in order to provide greater support or restriction of unwanted movements.
Why is it used?
Taping can be used to treat a variety of musculoskeletal injuries:
– Soft tissue injuries e.g. muscle strains and ligament sprains
– Bone injuries e.g. shin splints
– Tendinopathies
– Swelling and bruising
– Reduce muscle spasm
How does it work?
Tape provides our bodies with proprioceptive feedback; it also enhances healing through increased circulation and facilitation of normal movement patterns.

Trigger points are naturally distributed across our bodies; however, it is only when they become irritable and we start to experience pain or discomfort that we notice them!
These points are palpable nodules of taught muscle fibres which develop through muscular overload, imbalance, trauma or injury.
