Ignite Entertainment shines a light on Black history and culture throughout February and beyond
At Rogers, we are proud to celebrate Black History Month with our customers, employees, and the community by recognizing the legacy and contributions of Black Canadians. This month, and throughout the year, we are helping to educate and amplify the rich storytelling of Black creators and talent through film and television.
From riveting documentaries to ground-breaking thrillers, we’re spotlighting these powerful and important voices with a curated selection of some of the best in Black Entertainment through Ignite Entertainment (Ignite TV and Ignite Streaming).
To access this content, Ignite TV customers can simply say “Black History Month” into the award-winning voice remote to watch more than 200 titles across movies, TV, and more including:
Till (On Demand) – The biographical drama based on the true story of Mamie Till-Bradley, an educator and activist who pursued justice after the murder of her 14-year-old son Emmett in 1955.
The Woman King (On Demand) – Set in the 1820s, this epic historical action drama tells the story of the Agojie, the all-female warrior unit that protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey during the 17th to 19th centuries.
Emancipation (Apple TV+) – Loosely based on a real-life story, this action thriller stars Will Smith as an enslaved man in Louisiana in the 1860s who escapes his plantation.
Beast (On Demand) – Starring Idris Elba, this action horror film follows a widowed father and his two teenage daughters as they visit a South African game reserve and must fight to survive when they are attacked by a man-killing lion.
Nope (On Demand) – This science fiction horror film, written and directed by Jordan Peele, stars Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer as horse-wrangling siblings attempting to capture evidence of an unidentified flying object.
Biggie: I Got A Story To Tell (Netflix) – This biographical documentary offers a look into the life and musical career of rapper Christopher Wallace, better known as The Notorious B.I.G.
Marley (Netflix) – This documentary explores the music, life, and legacy of reggae icon Bob Marley, from his birth in 1945 to his death from cancer at age 36.
Abbott Elementary (Global / StackTV) – Emmy Award winning mockumentary sitcom created by and starring Quinta Brunson as a positive second-grade teacher at the poorly-funded Abbott Elementary school.
The Wonder Years (Disney+) – A coming-of-age tv series inspired by the 1988 series of the same title. Starring Elisha “EJ” Williams, the show follows his life as he grows up in Montgomery, Alabama in the late 1960s.
Them (Amazon Prime Video) – This horror anthology series is set in 1953 and follows a Black family who, during the Second Great Migration, moves from North Carolina to an all-white neighborhood in Los Angeles.
Rap Sh!t (Crave) – Created by Issa Rae, this television series centers on two Miami-based rappers who try and find success in the music industry.
