If you’re thinking of scraping your dandruff for likes – please don’t
BRB, just throwing up a bit
You know those videos of people popping their spots, tweezing their ingrown hairs or cleaning out their earwax? The ones that are all totally disgusting but also weirdly popular?
Well there’s a new trend in the genre of gross-videos-we-can’t-stop-watching, welcome to the world ‘dandruff scraping’.
These are essentially ASMR-style videos of people scraping dandruff flakes off their scalps with a fine-tooth comb.
Yes, it’s as vile as it sounds – especially because the flakes are often much, much larger than your average bit of dandruff. To give you an idea, some of them look like a snowstorm.
Remember Edward Scissorhands? It’s like that snowy bit in the film. Only it’s horrifying, not magical.
If you really want to watch one, there’s plenty out there (but don’t say we didn’t warn you).
And if you’re thinking of filming your own crusty scalp for YouTube likes, well… it’s not a good idea.
Dermatologists are warning that the kind of dandruff in these videos could be a sign of seborrheic dermatitis – a condition which needs medical attention.
Plus, if you do have dermatitis on your scalp, then the skin will be quite red and raw. Going at it with a comb, or any other sharp implement, is going to introduce bacteria.
This can then lead to infection, which isn’t something anyone wants.
Dr Anjali Mahto, from the British Association of Dermatologists, tells BBC Three: “I would recommend people avoid scraping and picking at their scalp, it can be painful and you risk inflammation and infection. A bit like spot-popping videos, many people find these videos very satisfying to watch, but in reality the practice is best avoided.”
She adds that dandruff, if it’s not too severe, can usually be treated at home.
“For mild cases, anti-dandruff shampoos can be effective – massage into the scalp and leave for five to 10 minutes before rinsing,” she says, adding that if it’s really bad, you should get professional help.
“For bigger flakes, you can try a descaling preparation overnight, though you might want to discuss options with your doctor. For severe cases you should see a GP, particularly if you develop a weeping rash.”
So that’s that – as tempting as it might be to scrape your scalp until it’s raw, just don’t do it.
If your dandruff’s not that bad, treat it at home with a specialist shampoo (of which there are many). If it’s so severe you want to scrape it all off for clicks, get yourself to a doctor post-haste.
And if you’re in need of some ASMR that isn’t absolutely repulsive, we’re big fans of this rabbit eating a crunchy carrot.
Now that is satisfying (and adorbs).
