Use UV light to detect semen stains. Turn off the lights in the room and hold the UV light above the fabric. Shine a light over the fabric and observe – usually the semen stain will glow under the light. Stains can be yellow, green, or other colors, depending on the type of lamp you use. • UV lamps, also called ultraviolet lamps, emit ultraviolet light on the surface that you shine on. [2] X Research Source
  • Note that a UV light is not a 100% sure way to identify semen stains. [3] X Trusted Source PubMed Central Go to Source Body fluids such as urine and blood will also light up under UV light. [4] X Research Sources

Turn your smartphone into a UV light if you don’t have one. Start by applying a piece of clear tape to the camera LED and using a blue marker to color the lens. Glue another piece of masking tape on top and color with a blue marker again. Finally, glue a third piece of masking tape on top and color the lens with a purple marker. So you have your homemade UV lamp! [5] X Research Sources

  • This homemade UV lamp tip is much more useful than the UV lamp app on your phone. These applications, while simulating a UV lamp, do not actually simulate its effects.

Find more solid proof with a home test kit. Use a home semen detector to test for stains you spot under UV light. This test kit will detect acid phosphatase (AP), an enzyme found in semen and vaginal fluid. Note, however, that this test is not entirely accurate, as AP is also present in other body fluids. [6] X Research Sources

  • You can also use a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test kit to narrow down the range of results, but this is also not entirely certain.
  • If you are really curious about the composition of the stain, send the sample to a private laboratory for testing.

Wash new stains on regular fabrics in cold water. Place dirty linens or sheets under cold running water. Avoid using warm or hot water, as it can make the stain permanent. Here are a few tips for cleaning semen stains on different materials and surfaces:

  • Wool and silk: Soak fabrics in water mixed with mild soap before putting them in the washing machine or hand washing.
  • Carpet: Use a sponge dipped in soapy water to dab the stain, then scrub the carpet surface with a clean sponge and pat dry with a paper towel.
  • Mattress: Remove stains with a damp sponge and mattress stain remover. Then use another sponge to wipe off the detergent. Dry the newly treated mattress area with several sheets of paper towels.
  • Upholstered mattress: Dab and blot the stain with a wet cloth. If the semen stain is still not clean, you can spray the mattress cleaning solution, then dry it with a paper towel. [10] X Research Source

Treat dry stains with an enzyme stain remover solution. Use a stiff brush to scrub the stain as clean as possible. When the fabric is almost completely clean, you will soak it in water mixed with a stain remover enzyme solution, then put the item in the washing machine or wash it the way you usually do. [11] X Research Source

    • Choose a biological soap when you wash fabrics.
    • If it’s silk or wool, you can soak it in mild soapy water, then put it in the washing machine or hand wash as usual.
