Everyone needs a trip away from home from time to time. Pets, you can ask friends, neighbors or services to take care of them, but what about plants? Some plants can endure quite a long time without watering, but others need weekly or even daily care. If you’re going on a long trip, you need to make sure your plants at home have enough water to survive while you’re away. Many times you don’t even need to ask your friends or neighbors to take care of the plants!
Steps
Make water bottles for plants
- You can also buy automatic watering balls at the store.
- Use a marker to mark the water level on the bottle. Check back in a few hours (or after a day). If the water level is lower than the marked level, the water is flowing well. If the water level doesn’t change then something is probably clogging the water bottle.
Make a drip irrigation system
- This method will provide the plant with water for up to a week.
- The rope must be able to absorb water. This method won’t work if the cord doesn’t absorb water. [7] X Research Sources
- For plants that don’t need a lot of water, such as succulents, you can use one pot of water for two or three plants. Even if the water tank is really empty, the plants can still survive thanks to their water holding properties.
Make a drip irrigation bottle system
- Punch a hole on the same side of the bottle. When burying the bottle in the ground, point the holes toward the tree.
- Initially, you should only drill a few holes. Too little is better than too much. You can easily drill more holes if that’s not enough, but sealing an existing hole isn’t so easy.
- Use a marker to mark the water level on the bottle. Check back in a few hours. If the water level does not change, you should loosen the cap a little. Tighten the bottle cap more tightly if the water level drops too much.
Ask friends or neighbors for help
- You should also consider using a do-it-yourself irrigation system. That way, your plants will rely on the irrigation system, and your neighbors only need to refill when the water bottles are empty.
- Specific guidelines for watering the plant might be as follows: Water this plant ½ cup (120 ml) of water every Saturday night. [14] X Research Source
- Specific instructions for caring for the plant can be as follows: Pour excess water in the watering dish under the basil pot every day. [15] X Research Source
Create a tiny greenhouse
- If possible, keep the lights on in the bathroom.
Advice
- You will keep water longer if you bring potted plants into the house.
- Calculate the time you are away from home. If you are only going to be away for a week, a wet watering before going is enough to meet the needs of the plant. [19] X Research Source
- Consider the weather factor. If you live in a hot, dry climate, perhaps a water bottle plugged into the ground is not enough to provide water for the plant. You should ask a neighbor to water the plants. [20] X Research Source
- Think about the type of tree you plant. Seedlings need more care than larger plants and have taken root. [21] X Research Source
- Remember to repay the person you asked to take care of the tree, or they won’t be willing to help you next time.
- Test your irrigation systems a few days before you go to make sure they are working properly.
- Install drip irrigation systems, timers or other automatic irrigation devices. This device does not need to be durable or complicated. You probably just need a perforated water pipe in the right place to water and connect to the timer water valve.
Warning
- The suggestions above won’t help you water your plants forever!
- Use caution when telling others that you will be away from home for a while.
