In one of only three games on the MLB schedule Monday, the Chicago Cubs meet the San Diego Padres for the first of a three-game set in the Golden State.
The Cubs come into the series with a 33-26 record, currently tied with the streaking-Milwaukee Brewers for first in the National League Central. The Cubs were one of the hottest teams in baseball at the end of May, but hit a roadblock over the weekend in a series against the San Francisco Giants, where San Fran took three of four against Chicago.

The Padres have fallen behind the Giants in the NL West, despite leading the division in the early stages of the 2021 season. Yet, their recent struggles have them holding a 36-25 record, and San Diego has lost six of their last eight games. That includes being swept in a three-game set at Wrigley Field just last week. In their most recent series, the Friars were able to take two of four, at home, against the NL East-leading New York Mets.
On the hill for the Cubbies will be Adbert Alzolay, who is 4-4 this season, and has won three of his last four starts. For the Padres, it will the 2-2 Ryan Weathers, who has not been credited with a win since May 9.
