It can be difficult to wake up a sleeping person sometimes, especially when they have a habit of deep sleep. You may want to use indirect methods, especially when you don’t have a good reason to wake them up (for example, it’s time to go to work). You can also try more direct methods, or if you’re brave enough and don’t mind upsetting them, you can play a prank on them. On the other hand, if a person is sleepwalking, it’s best to instruct them to return to bed and not wake them up if possible.

Say “Hello!” with a loud voice. This direct and simple method is most commonly used. You have to say it loud enough that almost anyone who hears it will wake up, and the greeting lets them know it’s time to wake up without saying much. [1] X Research Source

  • If they respond with a hum, keep talking. It’s a sign they’re awake but don’t want to get up yet. Remind them of their plans for the day and grab their breakfast or coffee to get them out of bed.
  • You can also pat them on the shoulder to wake them up.

Leave the phone ringing in the room. Turn the volume of your phone to maximum. Leave the phone in the person’s room and use another phone to call your number. If you leave your phone far enough away from the bed, they’ll have to get up to find out where the noise is coming from. [2] X Research Source

  • Or you can set an alarm.

Turn on the TV with loud sound. If there’s a TV in the person’s room, turn on the TV and select their favorite show, then turn the volume up. You can also choose a certain animated channel that is annoying. Either way, the light and noise from the TV will wake them up.

  • Don’t turn the volume so loud that you feel uncomfortable too. You just need to adjust the volume just enough to make it difficult for the person to go back to sleep.

Take advantage of the pet of the person you want to wake up. Using cats and dogs is an effective way to wake people up. If your pet has a habit of barking or climbing on top of the owner, let him in the room and let him do the rest. [3] X Research Sources

  • If your pet doesn’t enter the room on its own, use his favorite toy or food to lure him into the room. You can even use toys or food to lure the animal onto its owner!

Pull the person’s blanket off. If they’re still sleeping soundly, pull off the blanket they’re covering. Hold the top edge of the blanket over the person’s head and lift the blanket to force them to face the daytime air!

Note: This is a classic technique for a reason: a sudden change in temperature (and a sudden loss of warmth) will wake them up.

Give that person a massage. If you want to find a friendlier way to wake someone up, give them a massage! Gently massage the scalp, neck or back. While a massage is relaxing, your touch will wake them up.

Use indirect method

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/c/c7/Wake-Someone-Up-Step-1-Version-3.jpg/v4-728px-Wake-Someone-Up- Step-1-Version-3.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/c/c7/Wake-Someone-Up-Step-1-Version-3.jpg/ v4-728px-Wake-Someone-Up-Step-1-Version-3.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:” <div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Let light into the room. Open curtains or blinds to let natural light into the room. However, if the room has no windows or it is still dark, turn on the bedside lamp and other lights in the room. [4] X National Geographic Trusted Source Go to Source

Light signals the body to wake up, so letting light shine on a sleeping person can help activate their brain.

Use enticing food smells to attract attention. Make sure the door is open, then head straight down to the kitchen. Bake a piece of meat or some cake. Coffee also gives off a very attractive aroma. Often the smell of delicious food will be enough to wake the sleeping person up and out of the room. [5] X Research Sources

  • If you don’t have much time, use the microwave! Grill a few pieces of meat or place the baked food in the oven to warm up.
  • If the smell of food in the house still does not work, you bring breakfast to their bed. Not only will you help the person wake up, but they will also appreciate you for making them breakfast.
Image titled Wake Someone Up Step 3

Image titled Wake Someone Up Step 3

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/4/48/Wake-Someone-Up-Step-3-Version-3.jpg/v4-728px-Wake-Someone-Up- Step-3-Version-3.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/4/48/Wake-Someone-Up-Step-3-Version-3.jpg/ v4-728px-Wake-Someone-Up-Step-3-Version-3.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:” <div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Place the alarm clock away from the bed. If the person just rolled over and pressed the off button, they would stay in bed. If you put the watch out of reach (even if it’s a phone), they’ll have to get up to turn off the watch and have a hard time getting back to sleep. [6] X Research Source

Tip: Alternatively, if the person hasn’t set an alarm clock, set a clock by the bed and set a timer. They may think they have set the time and forgot to turn off the alarm.

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/7/73/Wake-Someone-Up-Step-4-Version-3.jpg/v4-728px-Wake-Someone-Up- Step-4-Version-3.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/7/73/Wake-Someone-Up-Step-4-Version-3.jpg/ v4-728px-Wake-Someone-Up-Step-4-Version-3.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:” <div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Adjust the temperature. If you have time, adjust the room temperature to wake the person. For example, you can turn on the fan at high speed or set the air conditioner temperature to be very cold. Or you can turn on the heater and blow the hot air on them. The method of changing the temperature takes time, but often causes them to wake up uncomfortable. [7] X Research Sources

  • Using heating or air conditioning to change the temperature can be a little uncomfortable.
  • You can also open a window if it is very hot or very cold outside.

Make noise in the room. Go into the room where the person is sleeping and make some noise. Be careful not to make too much noise, or you will startle them and get angry when they wake up. You just need to make a rattling sound like picking up something on the table and putting it down.

  • You can also open the door as to “check the situation” and close it.

Make noise elsewhere in the house. Make pots and pans clatter in the kitchen, or forcefully open and close the door. Turn on the TV in the next room. Ambient noise will wake the sleeping person.

  • Another option is to turn on the faucet in a nearby bathroom, or talk outside their door.

Play pranks

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/7/7f/Wake-Someone-Up-Step-12.jpg/v4-728px-Wake-Someone-Up-Step-12. jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/7/7f/Wake-Someone-Up-Step-12.jpg/v4-728px-Wake-Someone-Up-Step- 12.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”></div> “}
Make loud noises with the intention of waking them up. Go into a room, knock a metal or wooden spoon against the bottom of a pot, or knock two things together to make a loud noise, like two pot lids. Choose a noise loud enough to wake them up. This technique is very effective if it takes them by surprise. [8] X Research Sources

  • If you have an instrument, such as a drum or a trumpet, play it right where they’re sleeping. You can also whistle.

Open music. Another option is to play their favorite song that has a strong beat. Play that music at high volume in the room they’re sleeping in or the next room. They’ll jump out of bed right away! [9] X Research Source

  • You can use headphones, but remember to keep the volume moderate to avoid damaging your hearing.

Pull the sleeping person out of the bed. Of course, you shouldn’t hurt them and you don’t need to pull them out of bed completely. As soon as you pull them, they may wake up, especially when you pull the blanket off. [10] X Research Source

  • It is best to hold on to the ankle or calf position so as not to hurt them.

Pretend there’s an earthquake. Shake the bed vigorously and at the same time shout “Wake up, there is an earthquake!” By the time they realized there was no earthquake, they were fully awake. [11] X Research Source

  • You can also shake the mattress they are on instead of shaking the bed.

Put cold water on the sleeping person. The method of waking up by placing cold water on the face is most effective. Pour some water into an ice cup, then pour cold water into another cup. Putting a glass of cold water on your face or chest will have an immediate effect, but be prepared for a tantrum! [12] X Research Source

  • Prepare a towel in advance to help them calm down!

Recognize the person who is sleepwalking. People who are sleepwalking often have a lethargic expression on their faces. You won’t be able to get their attention, and they might walk around in the dark. If you meet someone in this condition, they are probably sleepwalking. [13] X Research Source

Often they are trying to complete a task, such as rummaging through a drawer as if looking for something.

Guide them to bed. The best solution is to put them back to bed. Gently guide them along the way and make sure they get to bed safely. They will almost certainly go to bed again. [14] X Research Source

  • Gently use your hands to turn them in the right direction.

    You should only wake the sleepwalker if they are trying to do something dangerous. When sleepwalking, some people will do things like cook, tear the curtains, even drive. While waking a sleepwalker is not easy, you need to if they are trying to do something that is dangerous to themselves or others. [15] X Research Source

    • Since sleepwalkers tend to sleep very deeply, it can be difficult to wake them up. Try calling their name out loud or gently shaking their shoulder. If this doesn’t work, try making a loud noise or spray a little water on their face. Remember, they will be disoriented when they wake up and are more likely to get angry.
  • Warning

    • Before using a method in this article, try to imagine how the person would feel when awakened. You may have to deal with their anger or irritation.
