It can be difficult to wake up a sleeping person sometimes, especially when they have a habit of deep sleep. You may want to use indirect methods, especially when you don’t have a good reason to wake them up (for example, it’s time to go to work). You can also try more direct methods, or if you’re brave enough and don’t mind upsetting them, you can play a prank on them. On the other hand, if a person is sleepwalking, it’s best to instruct them to return to bed and not wake them up if possible.
Steps
Use the direct method
- If they respond with a hum, keep talking. It’s a sign they’re awake but don’t want to get up yet. Remind them of their plans for the day and grab their breakfast or coffee to get them out of bed.
- You can also pat them on the shoulder to wake them up.
- Or you can set an alarm.
- Don’t turn the volume so loud that you feel uncomfortable too. You just need to adjust the volume just enough to make it difficult for the person to go back to sleep.
- If your pet doesn’t enter the room on its own, use his favorite toy or food to lure him into the room. You can even use toys or food to lure the animal onto its owner!
Note: This is a classic technique for a reason: a sudden change in temperature (and a sudden loss of warmth) will wake them up.
Use indirect method
Light signals the body to wake up, so letting light shine on a sleeping person can help activate their brain.
- If you don’t have much time, use the microwave! Grill a few pieces of meat or place the baked food in the oven to warm up.
- If the smell of food in the house still does not work, you bring breakfast to their bed. Not only will you help the person wake up, but they will also appreciate you for making them breakfast.
Tip: Alternatively, if the person hasn’t set an alarm clock, set a clock by the bed and set a timer. They may think they have set the time and forgot to turn off the alarm.
- Using heating or air conditioning to change the temperature can be a little uncomfortable.
- You can also open a window if it is very hot or very cold outside.
- You can also open the door as to “check the situation” and close it.
- Another option is to turn on the faucet in a nearby bathroom, or talk outside their door.
Play pranks
- If you have an instrument, such as a drum or a trumpet, play it right where they’re sleeping. You can also whistle.
- You can use headphones, but remember to keep the volume moderate to avoid damaging your hearing.
- It is best to hold on to the ankle or calf position so as not to hurt them.
- You can also shake the mattress they are on instead of shaking the bed.
- Prepare a towel in advance to help them calm down!
Awaken the sleepwalker
Often they are trying to complete a task, such as rummaging through a drawer as if looking for something.
- Gently use your hands to turn them in the right direction.
- Since sleepwalkers tend to sleep very deeply, it can be difficult to wake them up. Try calling their name out loud or gently shaking their shoulder. If this doesn’t work, try making a loud noise or spray a little water on their face. Remember, they will be disoriented when they wake up and are more likely to get angry.
Warning
- Before using a method in this article, try to imagine how the person would feel when awakened. You may have to deal with their anger or irritation.
