Set green screen. You can purchase industry-standard green backdrops online, or use a green paper/poster instead if needed. [1] X Research Source

  • The background should be as flat as possible, and at the same time must have a uniform blue color.

Place the subject from 1 to 4.5 m from the background. 1 m is the minimum distance between the object and the background to minimize the shadow, this factor is very important in eliminating the blue screen later. For optimal results, you should estimate the distance between the subject and the background from 3 – 4.5 m, this helps to simulate the light in the background clip so that the subject looks more natural. Choose a location for the camera. You need to position the camera far enough to capture the entire body (if possible) in the frame, but not so far away that the green screen is out of focus. [3] X Research Sources

Video. Capture yourself or another subject directly in front of the green screen. You need to make sure that any movement or subject is within the green screen, as any details that fall out of the background will be cut out after the video is edited.

Transfer video to computer. After recording, you need to transfer the video to your computer for editing.

  • If the video is on your phone, you should consider uploading the file to a cloud service like Google Drive, then accessing the service on your computer to download it.
  • If the video is on the SD card, plug it directly into the computer (or the built-in USB/SD card reader) to copy the video.

  • Advice

    • During filming in front of a green screen, it is important that the subject is completely separated from the background. You can use image or video editing tools to assist with splitting and mixing.
    • Never wear green clothes when filming in front of a green screen, as this will cause the clothes to blend into the background.

    Warning

    • LightWorks is freeware, but has some features (e.g. exporting to a specific file type, such as MP4), which are locked if you don’t pay to upgrade to the Pro version.
