In this article, the wikiHow will show you how to unzip and open a GZ folder, a type of compressed folder (ZIP). You can do it using many programs on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android platforms.

Download and install 7-Zip. Skip this step if 7-Zip is already installed on your computer. To install 7-Zip:

  • Go to http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
  • Click Download to the left of the exe option at the top of the page.
  • Double click on the 7-Zip installation file.

Access the GZ folder location. Click on the folder containing the GZ folder on the left side of the File Explorer window.

  • You may have to click through multiple folders to get to the GZ folder.

Select the GZ folder by clicking on the folder.

Open 7-Zip. Click on the 7-Zip application icon, which looks similar to a black and white “7z”.

Click on the 7-Zip address bar. This option is at the top of the 7-Zip window, just below the row of buttons (for example, Add , Extract , etc.). This is the action to select the address bar content.

Enter the address of the GZ folder. Press Ctrl + V to paste the GZ folder address in the address bar, then press the ↵ Enter key. This will take you to the GZ folder and see its contents.

Click on the folder icon. This icon is in the leftmost corner of the address bar. This is to select the entire GZ folder, allowing you to extract all the contents into a normal folder.

Click on Extract . The – icon is located in the upper-left corner of the 7-Zip window. A pop-up window will appear.

Select the decompression location. Click the ⋯ at the far right of the “Extract to” field, select the end destination (for example, Desktop ), and click OK .

Click OK . This button is at the bottom of the window. This is the operation to close the window and proceed to extract the contents of the GZ folder into another folder at the selected location.

  • After completing the process, you can double click on the extracted folder to see the contents of the GZ folder.

Download and install The Unarchiver. Skip this step if you have The Unarchiver installed on your Mac. To download and install The Unarchiver:

  • Open the App Store on Mac.
  • Click on the search bar in the upper-right corner of the window.
  • Type the unarchiver in the search field and press the ⏎ Return key.
  • Click on INSTALL APP below The Unarchiver app.
  • Enter your Apple ID and password if prompted.

Extract the GZ folder. You can extract the GZ folder by double-clicking on the folder, or clicking the archive location and selecting Extract in the bottom right corner of the window after double-clicking. Open the extracted GZ folder like normal folders.

  • If you get the message The Unarchiver can’t unzip the selected location, click the Apple menu icon in the upper-left corner of the screen, click System Preferences , click Security & Privacy , click the Privacy tab, click on Accessibility , click the lock in the bottom left corner, enter the password and select + , select The Unarchiver in the Applications folder (Application) and lock the menu.
  • You can open the GZ folder by selecting, clicking File > Open With , and then choosing The Unarchiver in the pop-up menu.

On iPhone

  • Since most email clients cannot open the GZ folder, the best way is to open the GZ folder in a cloud storage service like Google Drive.
