It is believed that opening and activating the chakras contributes to a person’s well-being and happiness, and helps the instincts to integrate with our emotions and thoughts. According to Hindu, Buddhist and Judaic teachings, chakras (also known as Sephirot in Hebrew) are vast energy fields in the body that control one’s spiritual attributes. So what happens if the chakras are stuck or overactive? If the chakras are not balanced, it will be difficult for you to find inner peace. To help you open and activate your spiritual chakras, we have put together here a guide to chakra awareness and chakra opening techniques.

When you open the chakras, you don’t have to worry about controlling the overactive chakras. Simply overactive chakras are compensating for underactive or closed chakras. Once you have opened all the chakras, the energy will automatically spread out and become balanced. Humans have 7 major chakras, 4 upper body chakras that govern mental characteristics, and 3 lower body chakras that control instinctive properties. These chakras are: [1] X Source of Research

  • Muladhara Chakra (Root Chakra)
  • Svadhisthana Chakra (Sacral Chakra)
  • Manipura Chakra (Sun Bunch Chakra)
  • Anahata Chakra (Heart Chakra)
  • Visuddhi Chakra (Throat Chakra)
  • Ajna Chakra (Third Eye Chakra)
  • Sahasrara Chakra (Crown Chakra)
  • In Judaism, the order of the sephirots is: Chesed (upper right), Gevurah (upper left), Tiferet (middle), Netzach (lower right), Hod (lower left), Yesod (middle part), and Malkut (bottom middle).

This chakra helps you feel physically and at ease in different situations. When opened, this chakra will give you a sense of balance, rationality, stability, and peace of mind. You will feel the reality of everything that is happening at that moment and connect with your body. [2] X Source of Research If the root chakra is underactive, you may feel anxious, confused, or even lost in social situations. If this chakra is overactive, you may behave like a greedy and materialistic person. How to open and balance the Root chakra is as follows:

  • Move your body and be aware of it. You can do yoga, walk around the neighborhood, even just clean the house.
  • Stand up and relax, feet shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent to connect with the ground. Push your pelvis forward slightly and balance your body so that the weight is evenly distributed on the soles of your feet. Put your weight forward and hold this pose for a few minutes.
  • Once connected to the ground, you will sit cross-legged and gently squeeze the tips of the index fingers and thumbs of your hands together in a relaxed motion.
  • Focus on the Root chakra at the point between the genitals and anus.
  • Reciting the “LAM” sound softly but clearly.
  • Relax, focus on the Root chakra, and think about its meaning and impact on your life. Keep going until you are completely relaxed. You may notice a feeling of “cleanliness” running through your body.
  • Visualize a red flower bud. Imagine the powerful energy radiating from the flower bud, slowly opening four vibrant crimson petals.
  • Squeeze the perineum, hold your breath, and then release.

The Sacral Chakra is responsible for gross sensations, flexibility, and sexuality. When this chakra is open, you will be able to express your emotions freely and naturally. [3] X Research Resources You will be open to connections and passions, and feel even more energetic. When this chakra is underactive, you may be stuck in a state of indifference or deadlock and find it difficult to open up to people. If it’s overactive, you may be overly sensitive and emotional and have a very high sex drive. You can follow these steps to open the sacral chakra and achieve balance:

  • Sit on your knees, back straight but still relaxed.
  • Place one hand above the other in your lap, palm facing up. The left hand is placed under the right hand, the left palm touches the backs of the fingers of the right hand, the two thumbs lightly touch each other.
  • Focus on the sacral chakra and what it stands for, at the sacrum (lower back).
  • Reciting the “VAM” sound softly but clearly.
  • Relax and still think about this chakra, what it means, and how it affects your life.
  • Continue until you are completely relaxed. This time too, you may have a feeling of “cleanliness.”

Also known as the Sun Bun chakra, the navel chakra is connected with confidence, generosity, and joy. When this chakra is open, you will feel warmth, self-control, and self-determination. [4] X Source of Research If the navel chakra is underactive, you are usually passive, hesitant, and fearful. When this chakra is overactive, you can become arrogant and aggressive. The way to open the navel chakra is as follows: [5] X Research Source

  • Sit on your knees, back straight but relaxed.
  • Place your hands in front of your belly, a little below the sun bun. Pinch your fingertips together and point away from your body. Cross your thumbs and straighten your remaining fingers (this is important).
  • Focus on the navel chakra at the spine a little above the navel and think about the characteristics it represents.
  • Recite the sound “RAM” softly but clearly.
  • Relax while continuing to think about the navel chakra, its meaning and its effect on your life.
  • Continue doing this until you are completely relaxed.

The Heart Chakra brings love, care and affection. When the Heart chakra is open, you will become rich in compassion and kindness. You will find yourself getting along with everyone. [6] X Research Source If this chakra is underactive, you often show “love” to others to the point of suffocating people, even making them feel that you are selfish. Find balance and open the Heart chakra with these simple steps:

  • Sit cross-legged.
  • Touch the fingertips of both hands together.
  • Place the left hand on the left knee, the right hand under the sternum.
  • Focus on the Heart chakra at the spine, at heart level, and think about what it represents.
  • Reciting the “YAM” sound softly but clearly.
  • During this time, you need to continue to relax your body and think about the Heart chakra, its meaning and its impact on your life.
  • Continue until you are completely relaxed, and the feeling of “cleanliness” will return and/or increase in the body.

This chakra plays a major role in the aspect of self-expression and communication. When the Throat chakra is open, it will be easier for you to express yourself; you are inclined to pursue art and other forms of creative expression. If the Throat chakra is blocked, you may have difficulty expressing emotions, frequently use negative words, and feel a lack of connection with others. [7] X Research Source Lying is also a sign that the Throat chakra is blocked. However, if the Throat chakra is overactive, you may talk too much and have trouble stepping back and listening to others. Open the Throat chakra with these steps:

  • Sit on your knees.
  • Fold your fingers into the palm of your hand, except for the thumb. Pinch the tips of your thumbs together, and point them up a little.
  • Focus on the throat chakra at the throat and think about what it represents.
  • Recite the sound “HAM” softly but clearly.
  • During this time, continue to relax your body, thinking about the throat chakra, its meaning and its impact on your life.
  • Continue like this for 5 minutes, you will once again feel the feeling of “cleanliness”.

As the name suggests, this chakra offers insight. It is believed that opening the third eye opens the door to our spiritual life. [8] X Research Source When the third eye is open, you will find your mind clear and dreamy. If it doesn’t work, you often expect someone else to think for you. You may find yourself dependent on beliefs and feel confused most of the time. If the third eye is overactive, you tend to be lost in a fantasy world. You can open your third eye with this simple meditation:

  • Sit cross-legged.
  • Place your hands under your chest. The two middle fingers are extended and lightly pinched together, facing away from the body. The remaining fingers of the two hands are folded, touching each other at the two upper knuckles. Two thumbs together and pointing towards the person.
  • Focus on the Third Eye chakra and what it symbolizes, slightly above the space between the ends of the eyebrows.
  • Recite “OM” or “AUM” softly but clearly.
  • Relax your body and continue to think about the Third Eye chakra, its meaning and impact on your life.
  • Continue doing this until the feeling of “cleanliness” returns or becomes stronger.

This is the seventh and most spiritual chakra. It is associated with wisdom and the feeling of being part of the universe. When this chakra is open, you will find yourself with an open mind and more awareness of the world and the connection between the world and yourself. If it is underactive, you tend to disbelieve in spirituality and get stuck in a rigid way of thinking. [9] X Source of Research If the Crown chakra is overactive, you often get lost in thoughts throughout the day, even putting your spirituality ahead of your body’s needs (food, water, and shelter). You can try opening the Crown chakra in the following way:

  • Sit cross-legged.
  • Place your hand on your stomach. The tips of the little fingers are together, facing up and away from the body, the remaining fingers are interlaced, the thumb of the left hand is placed under the thumb of the right hand.
  • Focus on the crown chakra at the crown of the head and think about the characteristics it represents.
  • Reciting the “NG” sound softly but clearly (yes, this sound is as difficult to pronounce as its written word).
  • During this time, your body will completely relax, and your mind will be at peace. However, do not stop focusing on the Crown chakra.
  • This is the longest meditation exercise, no less than 10 minutes.
  • Do not use the Crown chakra meditation if the Root chakra is not strong or open. Before dealing with this final chakra, you need a “grounding” that the Root exercises will give you.

Open the chakra with stone crystals.

  • Crystals can help you clear your chakras quickly and effectively. Choose a crystal that corresponds to the character and color of that chakra. Lie on your back on the floor and place the crystal on the location of that chakra on the body. [10] X Research Source Close your eyes and visualize the color of the crystal rotating around that chakra and slowly spreading throughout the body. Slowly open your eyes after 5-10 minutes. [11] X Research Source Consider each chakra color and its respective crystals that you can use below: [12] X Research Source

    • Root Chakra (red/black): jasper (red jade) or black tourmaline
    • Sacral Chakra (orange): carnelian or citrine (yellow quartz)
    • Sun Pussy Chakra (yellow): jasper or golden citrine
    • Heart Chakra (green/pink): aventurine (blue quartz) or rose quartz (rose quartz)
    • Throat Chakra (blue): turquoise or angelite
    • Third Eye Chakra (indigo): sodalite or lapis lazuli (lapis lazuli)
    • Crown Chakra (purple/white): amethyst or clear quartz

  • Advice

    • Try to meditate daily, even if you don’t have much time. How long you meditate is up to you.
    • When activating the “third eye”, gently circle around the position of the third eye.
    • Choose a place that’s warm and quiet and sit like you’re meditating. In the summer you can sit in the field or in the garden. In winter, choose a warm room that won’t distract you. Although not popular, but if you have a sauna, this is also a place to sit back and relax.
