Identify the type of lock you need to open. Most of the round handle locks for bedrooms/bathrooms have a knob or swivel mechanism on the inside of the door. The handle on the outside of the door will have a small round hole in the center that is used to open in an emergency. [1] X Research Source

  • If possible, you should determine what type of lock the lock is (push button or swivel mechanism).
  • If the door handle has a key hole instead of a round hole, you must follow the method used for the round handle lock of the door.

Find a suitable object to poke the lock. You need to find something long, thin, and small enough to fit in the hole, but hard enough to put pressure on the locking mechanism. Ideally, a screwdriver or small hex key, hairpin or paper clip. You can even use a bamboo skewer in the kitchen, or a cotton swab that has been removed.

  • If you’re using a hairpin or a paper clip, you’ll need to curl it into a long, straight metal rod.
  • If you can’t find the above items, use your creativity. Open the ballpoint pen and use the ink tube inside, or rummage through your purse for a toothpick. You’ll always find something usable!

Poke the lock with a find tool. If the lock has a push button, insert the tool into the hole until it feels blocked, and then push in again. You will immediately hear a click indicating that the lock has been unlocked. If the lock has a swivel mechanism, you must insert the tool and rotate it in a circular motion until it hits something, then continue to push gently. You will hear a click indicating the door has been opened.

  • When opening a lock with a swivel mechanism, you may have to rotate the poke both clockwise and counterclockwise until the lock opens.
Remove the handle. If you are unable to unlock using the method above, keep in mind that most round handle locks are assembled with 2 visible screws. Find a suitable screwdriver to open those two screws. You will be able to remove the handle in just a few minutes. Remove the rest of the locking mechanism from the hole and open the door. [2] X Research Source

  • It is best to open them little by little and alternate between the two screws.
  • You may have to pull the handle slightly while the two screws are loosening.
  • In some cases, two screws are hidden underneath the decorative cover. If so, you must remove the decorative cover first by inserting a hairpin into a small hole in the lid to remove it (if applicable), or use a flat-head screwdriver to pry it up. [3] X Research Sources

Use a credit card to open the lock of the door

Make sure you are allowed to poke the padlock. If the lock is not for your door, you must ask the landlord’s permission before proceeding. Breaking into someone’s home is a serious offense that could land you in jail.

Find a suitable card. The ideal card should be made of plastic, stiff but a little elastic. Avoid using a credit card as it can be damaged during unlocking. A supermarket membership card is a good choice, or a plastic injection library card. Even a solid business card can open some locks. [4] X Research Sources
Use the card to open the lock. Hold the slide card into the gap between the door and the door frame. Start at the top of the handle and slide the card down. You may have to wiggle the card back and forth a bit, but if you’re lucky, the card will override the latch and help you open the door. [5] X Research Sources

  • This technique only works with conventional key locks, and cannot open locks with fixed latches.
  • Some doors will open as soon as you use this technique, but others require more effort. You should experiment with different cards and opening angles.
  • Remember that this technique simply pushes the latch in, not the actual unlock. If you leave the door closed, you will still be locked out!

Make sure you are allowed to poke the padlock. If the lock is not for your door, you must ask the landlord’s permission before proceeding. Breaking the door and breaking into someone’s house is against the law!

Use other tools to open the lock. A hairpin is the best option, but you can use a paper clip or a piece of stiff wire. You must first straighten a hairpin or a paper clip to make a padlock. Then, fold the last 3mm of the poke at a 20-degree angle. [6] X Research Sources

  • If you use a hairpin with a plastic tip, use pliers or teeth to remove the plastic.
Crafting a rotating tree. Use another hairpin, or straighten a paperclip and fold it in half, then break it into an L. Spindles need to be fairly stiff, so you’ll need to use thick paper clips or hairpins. You can also use a small flathead screwdriver or something similar that can be inserted into the bottom of the keyhole. [7] X Research Sources
  • Poke the lock with the tools you just made. First, insert the swivel into the bottom of the keyhole and rotate it in the direction of the lock opening, the purpose is to apply pressure on the lock. Maintain this pressure throughout the performance. Then, slowly insert the poke into the top of the lock by gently rocking it up and down. You will hear a lot of clicking as the latch bars in the lock are raised. When you get all the latches up, the swingarm can suddenly rotate freely and the door opens.

    • This technique can open most locks in seconds, but it takes practice. If you get annoyed after a while, take a break and start over.
    • This technique is also effective for fixed-pin locks and padlocks.
    • Poking a lock in this way looks very suspicious, and could prompt neighbors to call the police. If you’re a teenager it’s a good idea to call your parents and let them know what’s going on before you start, and prepare evidence for the police that it’s your home.

  • Advice

    • Avoid using toothpicks or other fragile objects. The wooden stick can get stuck in the lock and you have to remove the entire door.
    • Consider other locks in the home that have the same locking mechanism.
    • If your bathroom or bedroom has a round-knob padlock, you should store something special to open the door in an easily accessible place so you don’t have to waste time searching in case of an emergency.

    Warning

    • Using this technique to break into other people’s homes, especially apartment buildings, is illegal. If unlocking causes you to be questioned, you must call the police.
    • Bathrooms have many potential hazards that can be deadly. If young children lock themselves in the bathroom, you should treat it as an emergency. If you cannot open the door right away, call emergency services. They handle such cases often, so give them a call to avoid a bad situation from happening.
