Bend the hairpin and make a 90 degree angle. Straighten the wavy lines and bend the hairpin upside down to form an L. The hairpin will act as a poke for you to unlock the door. [1] X Research Source

Remove the rubber end of the stapler. Use a knife or razor blade to remove the rubber end of the clamp. This is the tip that you will poke into the keyhole. [2] X Research Source

  • If you don’t have tools available, you can use your teeth or fingernails to remove them.

Insert the flat end of the stapler over the keyhole and bend it. Insert the clip into the keyhole about 1 cm and then push it left or right until the rest is level with the doorknob surface. Thus, the clamp head will be bent at an angle. [3] X Research Sources

  • We’ll use this bent end to separate the pins in the lock.

Bend the corrugated end of the stapler into a handle for easier handling. Bend the corrugated end of the clamp at a 30-degree angle to form the handle. This step is optional, but will make it easier to hold and easier to unlock. So you’ve done the padlock. [4] X Research Sources

  • Once broken, this wavy tip will look like the handle of a coffee cup.

Continue to bend the remaining staple to make the lever. Bend the end of the second pin to make a hook shape. With this stapler, we will not extend both ends, but bend in the same direction. [5] X Research Sources

  • The lever will directly rotate the lock after you lift the latch.

Tuck the lever underneath the keyhole. Tuck the shorter curved end of the lever close to the bottom of the keyhole. The lever will hang in front of the keyhole. [6] X Research Sources

  • We will use a lever to maintain pressure on the lock during the process in the direction that the door handle normally rotates to unlock.

Push the lever counterclockwise to apply force. The force of the lever rotates the shaft in the lock so that you lift each pin. Begin to rotate the lever until you feel a stop. It is not necessary to use force. [7] X Research Sources

  • Keep the lever in the locked position during unlocking.
  • This pressure will keep the pins from falling onto the shaft causing the handle to lock.

Insert the poke into the keyhole and feel the latches. Insert the slightly curved end of the poke stick into the keyhole with the tip facing up. The pins will be on the top part inside the keyhole. When the curved end is in the keyhole. Feel the pins by pressing down on the handle of the poke stick. At this point, the poke will push the pins up. [8] X Research Sources

  • Most traditional handle locks usually have 5 or 6 latches.
  • The key will push the latches into the correct position in line with the lock shaft, so you can open the door.

Push the stick down until you hear a “click”. Some pins will be pushed up easily when you push the poke down, but sometimes there will be latches stuck. These latches are called stoppers. Focus on the most braked stops first. Locate the hard-to-push pin and slowly push down on the stick handle until you hear a “click”. [9] X Research Source

  • This sound indicates that the latch system is no longer blocking the locking shaft.
  • You need to push the stoppers before working with the other pins.

Lift the remaining latches in the door lock. Continue to feel the pins with the poke and push the handle to lift each pin. After all latches are above the shaft, the locking mechanism opens. [10] X Research Source

Turn the lever counterclockwise to open the door. Turn the lever (as you would a key) until the lock opens. So you have opened the lock without the key. [11] X Research Source

    • Not all door handles open in the same direction, but in general you need to turn the lever counterclockwise.
    • The lever can only be fully rotated when the pins are in place above the shaft in the lock.

  • Advice

    • There are locks that only open in one direction. Before proceeding, you need to determine the direction to rotate to open the latch and use the power tool to maintain the correct pressure throughout the process. If the lever rotates in the opposite direction or the pressure is not maintained, the pins will return to their original position and you must start over.
