In this article, the wikiHow will show you how to uninstall software on a computer running Ubuntu Linux and also show you how to remove Ubuntu from your computer. If the computer runs Linux and another operating system at the same time, you can remove the Ubuntu Linux partition.

Find the program you want to uninstall. You need to remember the official name of the program file instead of the program name (for example, remember “avg.exe” instead of AVG Antivirus).

Enter the command “apt-get”. Type sudo apt-get --purge remove program into Terminal—be sure to use the exact name of the program instead of “program”—and press ↵ Enter .

Enter the root password. Enter the administrator password and then press ↵ Enter .

Confirm deletion. Type y and press ↵ Enter . The machine will proceed to uninstall the program. Once done, you can close Terminal.

  • The time it takes to complete the process depends on the size of the program.
  • If the program is not properly removed using the apt-get command, you can use sudo aptitude remove program .

Open Ubuntu software. The software has an orange suitcase icon with a white “A” on it. Ubuntu Linux has this built-in manager that allows you to remove programs with just a few clicks.

Find the program you want to uninstall. Scroll down to see a list of installed programs until you see the program you want to uninstall, or type the program name in the search bar in the top right corner of the window.

Make sure you have a Windows CD or USB. On a Linux-only computer, the simplest way to uninstall Ubuntu is to reformat the computer using the installation disc.

  • Ubuntu is not usually installed as the only operating system on a Mac.
  • To create a Windows CD on Ubuntu: insert the CD into the drive on your computer, download the ISO from the Windows download page, right-click the ISO file, select Write to Disc… (Write to disc…), Select the disc and select Create Image .

Reboot from CD. For most computers, you can press any key on your keyboard to do this.

Erase the Ubuntu drive. Click Delete , then select OK when prompted. This is removing Ubuntu from the drive and reformatting the drive back to NTFS, which is the file system used on Windows.
