Place your hands in the correct position. Your fingers will curve toward the keys, and your wrists will rest lightly on the table. That means you don’t put too much pressure on your wrist. Sit up straight with elbows bent. Correct posture not only helps you avoid mistakes, but also reduces the feeling of soreness in the arms, hands and shoulders.

Learn or relearn how to place the fingers. When you’re not typing, the four fingers of each hand rest on a number of keys called keystream or landmark keys. The left fingers rest on the A, S, D and F keys with the little finger on the A key; and the right fingers are on the J, K, L and key keys; with your index finger resting on the J key. [1] X Research Source By placing your finger on the landmark keys when not typing, you always know where the other keys are. Besides, you can easily press most of the keys on the keyboard from this position.

  • If you’re used to typing with 10 fingers, make sure you keep your hands in place. If not, you should get used to the position.
  • Most keyboards have a notch on the “F” and “J” keys to help you get your fingers into place without looking down. [2] X Research Source

Know which finger to type which key. Usually each finger will tap the keys diagonally down to the right. For example, the left little finger types the number 1, Q, A, and Z keys, and the ring finger taps the number 2, W, S, and X keys. Both index fingers type an extra row of keys next to their own row. For example, the right index finger types the number 7, U, J, and M keys together with the number 6, Y, H and N keys . [3] X Research source

Use your little finger to press the “Shift” key. Usually, you’ll use your pinky on the opposite side of the character you want to type. You also use your little finger to press the “Tab”, “Caps Lock” and “CTRL” keys on the left side, along with the punctuation keys, the “Backspace” key, and the arrow keys.

Always place at least one thumb on the spacebar. You should not remove both hands from the spacebar at the same time. Keeping a thumb on the spacebar means you don’t need to move your hand to create space between words which can save time.

Start by practicing typing each letter. Try typing the alphabet to get used to where the keys are. After looking at the keyboard to type a few times, try typing without looking.

Switch to typing words or sentences. You can try typing a poem you already know by heart, or try typing in the lyrics of your favorite song.

Text typing is available. For example, you would enter the pangram “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog”. This is a sentence or phrase with all the letters of the alphabet; this is useful for typing, as you will have to enter all the characters. [4] X Research Sources

Practice through daily work. If you must compose an email, try not to look at the keyboard and type with one finger. Challenge yourself by typing with 10 fingers. As you become more proficient, you will try typing without looking at the keyboard. This takes more time but will help you to know how to type better in the future.

  • Always remember to re-read your email for proofreading after practicing your typing technique. You’ll probably make mistakes during your workout, but fix them quickly before sending an email.

Use a typing program that focuses on developing technique. These programs teach typing techniques through games, so you’ll be motivated to learn.

Type slowly instead of fast when encountering familiar words. While practicing, it’s a good idea to slow down from time to time and spend a few minutes typing at a steady pace with one beat per character. Working at a steady pace helps create the muscle memory you’ll need when you want to type faster. [5] X Research Sources

Technical review. If you make the same mistake when entering a certain word or character combination, check that you have placed your hands in the correct position. In addition, you also need to check the strength of the finger. Maybe you accidentally pressed a certain key or the spacebar while pressing another key.

Patient. Learning to type takes time. Your typing speed will gradually increase after a period of practice.

Acceleration

Activate the fingers by making a fist. Open your hands slowly and bend your fingers back as much as you can without extra help. Repeat this 5 times and you will type faster than before.

Avoid looking at the keyboard. Looking at the keyboard makes you type slower, because muscle memory loses a chance to kick in. If you feel the need to look down at the keyboard, try to look only as you begin to type a sentence to check the placement of your fingers. [6] X Research Sources

Learn to type with a keyboard-free typing program (preferably with the Dvorak layout). There are plenty of free options to suit most people’s needs. Don’t look at the keyboard, and if you choose to practice with the Dvorak layout, don’t move the keys. This will only slow you down. To speed up learning, it’s a good idea to practice with meaningful content instead of the usual repetitive strings of characters that won’t help you.

When you are ready to participate in breaking the world record, go to [1] and choose the test, it is better to choose the one with the duration of 3 minutes to get more accurate results. To motivate yourself, you should note the results before, during and after practicing your typing skills to see the speed change. Choose different tests so you don’t know the content by heart (causing inaccurate results).
  • Advice

    • Use 10 fingers, instead of just one or two.
    • Remember that the timing of correct and incorrect keystrokes is the same.
    • Look for interesting sites that have typing contests and games. You can try searching with keywords like “Type fast games” and “Test your typing speed”.
    • You can use Typing Master on your computer to practice and improve your skills over time.
    • Try NitroType if you’re familiar with the keys and want to speed things up.
    • Play online games that make typing fun. Avoid games like “typing the alphabet”, as you’ll only be taught a phrase to the point of rote and won’t help with improving typing speed.
    • Don’t give up after the first test. You will improve over time; so keep trying.
    • Try typing a page in a book or article on Microsoft Word.
    • Avoid typing too much, as this causes pain and cramps in the fingers.

    Warning

    • If your hand starts to feel sore, stop. Rest will help relieve hand pain.
    • Please be patient. If you rarely use the computer, work out for a short period of time each day.
    • Do not use the computer for too long to avoid harm to health.
