Tapeworms are intestinal parasites that can attach to the intestinal wall, eat up nutrients and cause injury to pets. As the tapeworm matures, each separate segment containing the eggs will break off and pass out of the body in the feces. After leaving the body, the eggs will hatch into baby tapeworms and continue the infection cycle. If your pet is infected with tapeworms, you may see tapeworms in the hair around the anus or rice-like tapeworms in the stool. Even in the case of fresh faeces, you can spot these worms wiggling like worms. Steps
Tapeworm treatment
- If you buy a dewormer (helminthic) at a pet supply store, you should follow the instructions printed on the package.
- Most medications are taken orally. However, in some cases, pets may be given an injection or topical medication.
Give your pet medicine
- If using oral medication, you can use your index finger and thumb to separate the pet’s mouth and tilt the animal’s head back. This is the most effective way to get pets to open their mouths and take medicine. [7] X Trusted Source Washington State University Cplege of Veterinary Medicine Go to source
- After giving your pet medication, you should close its mouth. Close the pet’s mouth for 5-10 seconds, and gently rub the throat to help the pet swallow the medicine more easily.
- Make sure your pet has finished swallowing the medicine. Dogs and cats often spit out drugs. [8] X Trusted Source Washington State University Cplege of Veterinary Medicine Go to Source
Preventing tapeworm recurrence
- If pets live in a flea-infested environment, reinfection with tapeworms can occur for as little as 2 weeks. Medications for tapeworms are often very effective, so reinfection is often environmental. [11] X Research Source
Warning
- Although unlikely and uncommon, tapeworms can infect humans. You are at risk of getting your dog’s tapeworm if you eat fleas that are infected with tapeworms. Most cases of tapeworm infections are in young children. The most effective way to prevent tapeworms is to kill fleas actively and thoroughly. Although the rate is quite low, people are still at risk of being infected with dog tapeworms. [15] X Trusted Source Centers for Disease Contrp and Prevention Go to source
