Use a cold pack. Using an ice pack placed on the acne-prone skin will help relieve pain. You should wrap a towel around the ice pack to prevent your skin from getting too cold, then place the ice pack over the area with the sores. You must use a new towel for each application and wash the towel in hot water.

  • If cold doesn’t work, you should use half-warm and half-warm. Use boiling water to cool to medium-warm, dip the towel in the water and wring it out, then place the towel on the sore skin. Remember to use a clean towel or washcloth and apply it several times. [2] X Trusted Source National Health Service (UK) Go to Source

Take a warm bath. To reduce discomfort and pain at the site of herpes, you can take a warm bath. Warm water not only rinses but also helps reduce skin irritation, you should also add Epsom salt to the bath water. A warm bath can reduce itching and heal cold sores, and your skin will dry out quicker when you’re done bathing. [3] X Research Sources

Use baking soda. If the sores are oozing, you can use baking soda to dry them out, and baking soda will also help relieve itching and pain. Wet a cotton ball and dip it in a little baking soda. Then you lightly dab a cotton ball all over the skin with acne to cover it with a layer of baking soda. For each repetition you must use a new cotton ball to avoid contaminating the baking soda when dipping the cotton ball in it.

  • Do not use cornstarch. Bacteria easily multiply with cornstarch and so can cause an infection, especially if you have sores. [4] X Research Sources

Prepare a mixture of ointments from lavender essential oil and olive oil. Olive oil is not only good for the skin, but it also has antioxidants that help ulcers heal faster. Take a cup of olive oil in a pot along with a tablespoon of lavender essential oil and beeswax, then heat the pot over medium heat. When the mixture boils, remove the pot from the heat. After the mixture cools, use a cotton ball to dip it and apply it to the blisters. Each time you dot the mixture, you must use a new cotton ball, repeat until all the skin has the ulcer.

  • Do not boil the mixture for too long as the olive oil will burn. [5] X Research Sources

Use propolis. Propolis is a waxy substance secreted by bees that has antiviral properties and can speed up the healing of sores. You should use ointments or waxes containing propolis to relieve pain and treat herpes. These products are available online or at drugstores.

  • Propolis is available in capsules or tinctures, but you should only use it as an ointment. [6] X Research Sources Schnitzler, P. (2010). Use herbs. There are many herbs that can treat genital herpes. Ointment made with shiso extract helps to relieve pain, itching and discomfort. A topical cream containing Chinese sage and rhubarb extracts is as effective in treating female genital HSV infections as acyclovir. St Johns Wort flowers have long been considered herbs that inhibit the growth of the HSV virus. [8] X Research Sources Yarnell, E., Abascal, K., & Rountree, R. (2009). Eat seaweed. It has been found that seaweed has the ability to heal genital herpes symptoms. Different types of seaweed such as South American red seaweed, seaweed and Indian red seaweed can inhibit the growth of HSV virus. These types of seaweed are used as healing foods by adding to salads or stews, in addition, they are also made into functional foods. [10] X Research Sources Yarnell, E., Abascal, K., & Rountree, R. Drink functional foods. Some studies show that supplements can treat genital herpes. For example, taking 1-3 grams of lysine per day shortens the duration of illness. Supplements have also been shown to reduce the number of outbreaks of oral herpes. However, you should only take them for a maximum of 3-4 weeks.

  • Remember that lysine is an amino acid that can increase cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
  • You must consult your doctor before using, because some supplements can interact with medications you are taking. [12] X Research Source

Take antiviral drugs. There is no cure for HSV virus infection, and the virus stays in your body forever. Although not a natural treatment, antiviral drugs can treat symptoms when herpes is severe. It helps to reduce pain, discomfort and intensity of pimples. In addition, the drug also reduces the risk of spreading the disease to others, but does not completely eliminate this risk.

  • Common antiviral drugs to treat HSV include acyclovir (Zovirax), famciclovir (Famvir), and valacyclovir (Valtrex).
  • These drugs are often prescribed for the first flare-up and help control subsequent episodes. For example, the dosage for acyclovir is to take one 800mg tablet 5 times daily for 7-10 days.
  • The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, fatigue, dizziness, and muscle aches. [13] X Research Source

Changing habits to treat HSV

Eat healthier. Once you have the HSV virus, you need to stay as healthy as possible by eating healthy. Avoid eating processed, packaged or pre-cooked foods. Increase the amount of fruits, vegetables, oils and seeds consumed each day. Limit your intake of red meat and increase your intake of skinless poultry and fish. Focus on eating complex carbohydrates found in whole grains, lentils, beans, and vegetables.

  • Avoid foods that are processed with sugar, such as corn syrup (which is rich in fructose). If you need to eat something sweet, use stevia, which is 60 times sweeter than sugar. You should also avoid artificial sweeteners. [14] X Research Source

Do exercise. Our bodies work best when exercised. You should start slowly by walking more. For example, park your car far away from work, use the stairs instead of the elevator, take your dog for a walk or go for a walk after dinner. You can also sign up for a gym and find a fitness trainer. Some exercises you should try are weight training, cardiovascular exercises, yoga or using a full-body machine. In general, practice the way you like and persevere.

  • You need to consult your doctor first and know what you should and shouldn’t do. [15] X Research Source

Relax more. With genital herpes affecting every aspect of your life, you will feel more stressed every day. But this certainly doesn’t benefit the disease, as stress only worsens the condition. You have to combat that by relaxing. Every day you should spend more time for yourself to de-stress, participate in fun activities such as reading books or watching TV shows you like. Practicing yoga is a great way to relax. [16] X Research Source

  • Meditation is also a stress reliever. You can meditate anywhere and at any time. To successfully perform a meditation technique you need practice and patience.
  • Try visual self-hypnosis, which means you have to visualize a peaceful image and use it to lead you into a trance.

Understand the mechanism of disease transmission. Genital herpes is spread when you have sex with an infected person and have direct contact with their genitals, anus, or mouth. The disease is more contagious when the person has open sores, but the HSV virus can be contagious when there are no obvious sores. Birth control methods cannot protect against HSV. Male or female condoms don’t necessarily protect you because sores aren’t just on the genitals, but they can reduce the risk of infection.

  • You will pass the infection on to your sex partner whether or not you have acne at the time, but between outbreaks of acne the risk is lowest.
  • If you have mouth sores, you should not have oral sex with others, and vice versa.
  • In men, sores and skin lesions often appear on and around the penis, or around the anus. In women, sores appear around the genitals, anus, or in the vagina. If sores or lesions are present in the vagina, it may not be noticeable unless examined or the condition is causing vaginal discomfort and/or discharge.
  • The only way to prevent infection is to avoid vaginal, anal, or oral sex. [18] X Trusted Source US Office on Women’s Health Go to source[19] X Trusted Source Centers for Disease Contrp and Prevention Go to source

Recognize symptoms. Many people have genital herpes but have no symptoms, while others have few or many blisters. That’s why some people infect others without knowing they are infected with HSV virus. If symptoms are present, the lesion usually presents as an ulcer. Fluid-filled blisters form around the genitals or anus, then they burst and leave painful wounds. Sores can appear within two weeks of infection and last for two to three weeks. [20] X Research Source

  • Other common symptoms include itching, tingling or heat in the genitals or anal area, some flu-like symptoms such as fever, aches and pains, pain in the legs, buttocks or genital area , white discharge, swollen glands in the groin or along the neck, pain when urinating or defecating.

Cold sores flare up cyclically. HSV infection leads to recurrent and prolonged acne flare-ups. This virus can hide for a long time without showing any symptoms. It is not yet known what causes the virus to resume activity, but outbreaks tend to occur during periods of fatigue, stress, and illness. For women, the disease usually manifests itself during menstruation. The average number of outbreaks is about 4-5 times during the first year. The immune system then responds better to the disease, so the frequency and symptoms also decrease over time. [21] X Research Source

Understand possible complications. The HSV virus is especially problematic for people with weakened immune systems, and also for women who are pregnant or want to have children. HSV infection can lead to miscarriage and premature birth, and women infected with HSV can transmit the virus to their babies. In general, this disease is very dangerous.

  • Women infected with HSV often have to have a cesarean section because this reduces the risk of transmitting the infection to the baby.
  • The HSV virus also increases the risk of cervical cancer, so women with this condition should have a Pap smear periodically. [22] X Research Sources[23] X Trusted Source US Office on Women’s Health Go to Source[24] X Trusted Source Centers for Disease Contrp and Prevention Go to Source

Get tested if you have genital sores. HSV is diagnosed during a herpes outbreak by taking a sample of the sore for testing. It’s usually painless to take a sample from an ulcer, but if the area is heavily ulcerated, you may feel some pain.

    • If the sores are not clear, your doctor will order a blood test to look for antibodies against the virus.
    • Ask your doctor if the sore could be caused by another illness. Some diseases that also cause ulcers are fungal infections, hand, foot and mouth disease, syphilis, and shingles. [25] X Research Sources
  • Advice

    • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using dietary supplements.
    • Most natural treatment products are in the form of topical, not ingested. They are very safe and effective when used according to the manufacturer’s instructions, but there have been some reports of skin rashes or allergies. You should test on a small area of skin that is free of disease first and wait 24 hours. After trying the application without any reaction, the product may be helpful.
    • If you can’t find natural remedies at the drugstore, you should look online.
    • Alternatively, you can find your local physician or herbalist. It’s likely they’ll make a special ointment for you.
    • HSV infection often causes stress and depression for sufferers, but you are not alone in fighting the disease. There are now online dating communities and support groups on the internet, you can join one if you see fit. Talk to your partner to let them know how you feel and listen to their thoughts.
