Connect 2 computers to the same network. SMB (Server Message Block) is a protocol (a set of rules) for transferring files between two computers over the internet. This method can be applied to PC or Mac (or a combination of both). This is the simplest and fastest method to transfer large files between laptops.

  • Use only secure connections – public connections are not recommended.
  • Set a password to secure personal information on both computers.
  • The host laptop is the machine containing the file, the client laptop is the machine to transfer the file to.

Set up the host laptop. The server is the machine that is storing the file to be transferred. You need to change the network settings by specifying the workgroup name. This group acts as a meeting room where 2 computers meet. You can name the group whatever you want.

  • On Windows operating system, select the group name through “computer domain and workgroup settings”. When the changes are applied, you are asked to restart the computer.
  • On Mac, select the workgroup name via System Preferences ->Network ->Advanced->WINS. Select the workgroup name and save the changes. [1] X Research Source
  • For other cases, keep in mind the “name” of the server.

Access the file and start transferring data. Time to exchange files. Find the server “name” and click on it to access the shared folders on that computer.

  • On Windows, open the “Network” application. All computers in the shared network group will appear on the screen, including the server you just set up.
  • On Mac, all computers on the same network will appear in a Finder window.

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/b/b7/Transfer-Files-Between-Laptops-Step-5-Version-5.jpg/v4-728px-Transfer-Files- Between-Laptops-Step-5-Version-5.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/b/b7/Transfer-Files-Between-Laptops-Step-5- Version-5.jpg/v4-728px-Transfer-Files-Between-Laptops-Step-5-Version-5.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight” :546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Set up an FTP server. FTP (File Transfer Protocp – File Transfer Protocol) is a method of transferring files between two computers via the internet. First, you set up the server – the computer containing the file to be transferred – so that other machines can access the server. FTP is the most convenient method when you need constant access between two laptops.

  • On Mac, go to System Preferences->Sharing->Services and check “FTP Access”. Click “Start” and wait for the changes to take effect. Operation on each OSX version will be slightly different.
  • On Windows, go to Contrp Panel->Programs->Programs and Features->Turn Windows features on or off. Click the plus sign next to the “Internet Information Services” (IIS) box, then check the “FTP Server” dialog box. Click on “OK”.

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/7/7b/Transfer-Files-Between-Laptops-Step-7-Version-4.jpg/v4-728px-Transfer-Files- Between-Laptops-Step-7-Version-4.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/7/7b/Transfer-Files-Between-Laptops-Step-7- Version-4.jpg/v4-728px-Transfer-Files-Between-Laptops-Step-7-Version-4.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight” :546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Access files on the FTP server from FTP software. Now you just need to log in to the FTP server from the client and access files to transfer quickly and securely.

  • On Mac, go to Finder->Go->Connect to Server. You are required to provide the server’s IP address. Enter the address and click “Connect”.
  • On Windows, open a web browser and type the server’s IP address in the address bar. Go to File->Login As. Enter username and password to login.
  • If you’re having trouble finding the server’s IP address, refer to the article Determine your Mac’s IP address or Find your computer’s IP address.
  • To learn more about how to transfer files using FTP, refer to the article on how to set up FTP between 2 computers.

Using a storage device

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/f/f3/Transfer-Files-Between-Laptops-Step-8-Version-3.jpg/v4-728px-Transfer-Files- Between-Laptops-Step-8-Version-3.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/f/f3/Transfer-Files-Between-Laptops-Step-8- Version-3.jpg/v4-728px-Transfer-Files-Between-Laptops-Step-8-Version-3.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,”bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight” :546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Find a compatible storage device. External hard drives or USBs are often formatted to only be used on one operating system (OSX or Windows). Depending on the computer you want to transfer data back and forth, you may need to reformat the device to (FAT32) before proceeding. Using a storage device is one of the most time-consuming methods, but the easiest to implement if you are not well versed in technical methods.

  • If the computer recognizes the storage device and you can access files on both computers, continue.
  • If you need to reformat your device, you can learn more in the article Format FAT32
  • The limitation of this method is the speed, if copying many files, it will take a long time.
