Self grounding . Even if you don’t touch the circuitry or similar sensitive components inside the machine, grounding yourself only takes a few seconds and eliminates the (no matter how small) risk of the key’s electronics being affected.

Find a tool to pry the key up. You need something with a relatively wide, thin, and hard surface. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Guitar pluck keys
  • Credit Card/ATM
  • Plow stick for plastic components
  • Plastic butter knife

Collect tools. You’ll need a cotton swab (to clean the space between the keys) and a toothpick or similar thin, malleable object (to scrape away dirt build up around the keys).

{“smallUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images_en/thumb/c/c3/Temporarily-Remove-a-Key-from-a-Macbook-Step-5.jpg/v4-728px-Temporarily- Remove-a-Key-from-a-Macbook-Step-5.jpg”,”bigUrl”:”https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/c/c3/Temporarily-Remove-a-Key- from-a-Macbook-Step-5.jpg/v4-728px-Temporarily-Remove-a-Key-from-a-Macbook-Step-5.jpg”,”smallWidth”:460,”smallHeight”:345,” bigWidth”:728,”bigHeight”:546,”licensing”:”<div class=”mw-parser-output”></div>”}
Clean underneath the key. Use a toothpick (or similar item) to scrape the bottom around the key. This will remove debris, dirt, and so on from the key.

  • As always, you need to be gentle so you don’t get a toothpick stuck under the key.
  • Only insert the toothpick about 3mm below the key.

Clean the area around the key. Dip a cotton swab in some warm and clean water, then squeeze out all the water (because we only need a slightly damp cotton tip) and sweep the area around the key.

  • This will remove any sticky or greasy residue that has accumulated around the key, making it easier to remove the button.
  • This step also helps clean up any residue left after you scrape with a toothpick.
  • You can use isopropyl alcohol instead of water if the dirt around the keys is too stubborn.

Insert the pry tool into the space under the key. This is where the key is most likely to come apart.

Gently pry the key up. You may need to push the tool back and forth while prying; When a few “click” sounds are heard, the key cap has popped out.

  • After inserting the pry tool into the space below the key, you can press the tip of the rod a little deeper to increase traction.

Rotate the key and then drag it straight up. The top of the key should be facing you while pulling, so the key’s hook won’t get stuck.

Make repairs if necessary. After doing what needs to be done, you can insert the key back.

Reinstall or replace key components if necessary. Below the key is a white frame and a smaller piece of plastic; This construction helps the Mac’s keycaps pop in and out of place with ease. To reassemble the keycap, simply insert the smaller piece of plastic into the frame, then snap the frame back into place vertically so that the small square hole is to the right of the gap.

Snap the key into place at a 45-degree angle so that the white hook in the key compartment matches underneath the keycap.

  • If the hook is not in the correct position, you need to pick up the key and try again.
