Parakeets, also known as parrots, are very popular pets because they are easy to keep and are intelligent and curious birds. If you want to make a connection with your parrot and keep it excited and happy, you can even teach it to talk. Parakeets are very good mimics, they love to speak the language in their flock, even if there are birds of different species or humans like you in the flock.

There is a limited number of parrots. Parakeets can develop vocalizations by conversing with other birds, so having a few birds can help them develop variety in their calls. However, if there are too many birds, they will focus on communicating with other birds, instead of communicating with you.

  • Having a few birds usually won’t limit your ability to train them to talk, but more than a few can interfere with your training.
  • If you only have one parakeet, trick it into thinking it has a friend by placing a mirror in its cage. This will help it develop and practice vocalization. However, you should remove the mirror from the cage before you start teaching it to speak, so that the bird focuses its attention on you.

Make your parrot feel comfortable with you. Make friends with the bird by spending time with it, talking to it, and keeping it nice and comfortable in your home. Basically, treat your parrot like part of the family, for that matter.

  • The goal is to form trust between you and your parrot. Don’t force it to communicate with you if it doesn’t want to. If it scares or ignores you, it’s just a sign that the timing isn’t right or that you’re moving too quickly. That’s not a sign that it will never talk to you.

Choose the right time to train your parrot. Make sure it is calm and ready to focus its attention on you. If it’s tired or unfocused, it won’t be easy to train.

  • The best time to train birds is in the morning. You can even start repeating the words for the bird over and over before opening the cage and starting the day.

Repeating a word. Speak clearly and slowly, teaching them a word first. Your parrot may not know how to repeat the word right away, but keep repeating it.

  • Note that macaws pronounce the consonants d, t, k, p, or b most correctly. A simple phrase like “Hi, how are you?” won’t work because it’s hard for birds to say the phrase.
  • If you don’t know what words to teach your bird first, consider teaching it its own name. This is a word they may have heard before, so the sound may be familiar to your parrot.

Reward your parrot if it says the words you teach it. This will reinforce the behavior and at the same time help develop a connection between you and the parrot. Parakeets are very fond of millet branches; Celery and carrots are also great treats, and they provide essential nutrients for your parrot’s health.

Talk to the bird every few minutes. However, don’t try to teach it too long at once. Teaching your parrot about half an hour a day is a good way. If you try to teach it too long, the parrot may get bored and become less willing to learn.

Do not allow the bird to be distracted while studying. Keep it centered by covering three sides of the cage with cloth. Stand right in front of the cage when talking to it, so it knows you’re talking to it.

Focus on each lesson. Do not move on to the second word until the parrot can say the first phrase correctly at least three times in a row. Making sure your parrot has actually memorized a word before continuing will help it to be more likely to repeat the same old word or phrase later on.

Please be patient. Do not try to force the parrot to speak. Many macaws never learn to speak, but it’s fun to try!

Move on to complex words or phrases. Once your parrot has mastered a few words, you can move on to full phrases. Just like teaching a single word, repeat the phrase to your parrot when it is calm and ready to focus on you. Parakeets will focus if you are alone in the room, other people can cause your parrot to panic.

Teach your parrot to say the name or color of an object. Hold the object in your hand when you say a word. When you have practiced enough, you will simply hold the object and the parrot will repeat the word you teach it. It will simply repeat the sound you make but it will look like it can actually identify the object.
  • Advice

    • Combine teaching your parrot to talk with training it to land on your finger. If you want it to step on your finger, run your finger gently on its belly. Once the bird has landed on your finger, you can directly speak to it.
    • Try singing or playing music to your parrot. Some macaws can even learn music and repeat.
    • Talk to them at the same time every day and they will learn to repeat it.

    Warning

    • Do not scold, scare, or get angry with your parrot! Not all macaws can speak. Never show frustration towards birds. If you start to get bored, go elsewhere instead of punishing it for your boredom.
    • When removing the bird from the cage, close the window. The bird will think it is released and may fly to the window, which can seriously injure or kill them.
