This article shows you how to capture what’s on your HP computer’s screen. By default, all HP computers run Windows, so you’ll use the Windows method to do this.
Steps
Using the keyboard on Windows 8 and 10
- If your keyboard has a number pad on the right, you’ll find the prt sc key to the left of the top row of keys in the number pad area.
- Note that the word “prt sc” (or something similar) can be at the top or bottom of the key. If it’s at the bottom of the key, below another letter, you’ll probably need to use the Fn key as well.
- Usually you will find the Fn key in the lower left corner of the keyboard.
- If the word “prt sc” is below another text on the Print Screen key, you need to hold the Fn key as well.
- Make sure you are holding down the ⊞ Win key during this operation.
- If the screen doesn’t dim, try releasing the prt sc key and then pressing it again. If that still doesn’t work, you’ll need to either hold down the Fn key if you forgot to do so, or release the Fn key and try again if you’re already holding it.
- Open File Explorer

.
- Click the Pictures folder on the left side of the window.
- Double-click the “Screenshots” folder in the “Pictures” window.
- Double-click the screenshot.
Use the keyboard on any version of Windows
- If your keyboard has a number pad on the right, you’ll find the prt sc key to the left of the top row of keys in the number pad area.
- Note that the word “prt sc” (or something similar) can be at the top or bottom of the key. If it’s at the bottom of the key, below another letter, you’ll probably need to use the Fn key as well.
- Usually you will find the Fn key in the lower left corner of the keyboard.
- You won’t see any indication that the screen has been captured.
- If the word “prt sc” is below another text on the Print Screen key, you need to hold the Fn key as well.
. Click the Windows icon in the lower left corner of the screen.
- You can also click the Paste profile-clip icon in the upper-left corner of the Paint window to paste the screenshot.
- If the screenshot hasn’t been pasted, you may need to redo and take a screenshot while holding down the Fn key (or without holding Fn if you’ve held it down before).
- Ideally, use the PNG format because PNG files do not lose quality over time (unlike JPEG files). However, JPEG files will take up much less storage space on the hard drive.
Using Snipping Top
. Click the Windows icon in the lower left corner of the screen.
- In the new version, since “Rectangular Snip” is the default mode, you can simply click New on the left side of the Snipping Top window to create a new screenshot.
- If you want to capture the entire screen, you need to click and drop from the upper left corner of the screen to the lower right corner.
- Click the floppy-shaped “Save” icon at the top of the Snipping Top window.
- Enter the name of the file in the “File name” text box.
- Select the folder where the screenshot will be saved on the left side of the window.
- Click Save .
- Free-form snip — Allows you to select the portion of the screen you want to capture by clicking and drawing freely. Release the mouse when you have finished circling the part of the screen you want to capture.
- Window snip — Allows you to capture an open window (such as a browser window) without mixing anything else. Click on the window you want to take a screenshot of.
