Swollen lips are characterized by a swollen mouth or an unusually thickened part of the lips. Besides swelling, some of the symptoms associated with this condition include pain, bleeding, and/or bruising. If your lips are swollen, you should apply some first aid measures to treat and reduce complications. However, if your swollen lips are accompanied by pain in your head or mouth, you should go to the hospital immediately.
Steps
Treating Swollen Lips at Home
- Use soap and warm water. Gently pat the swollen lips, avoid scrubbing hard so as not to hurt and not cause other damage.
- You can wrap a few ice cubes in a clean towel, use a pack of frozen peas or a cold spoon to apply.
- Gently press the cold pack on the swollen area for about 10 minutes.
- Then rest for 10 minutes and continue applying ice until the swelling subsides or until the pain and discomfort are gone.
- Note: Do not put ice directly on lips. This will cause the lips to hurt or lose sensation because it is too cold. You should make sure the ice is wrapped in a towel or cloth.
- Applying ice will help stop the bleeding, but if the wound is still bleeding, hold the wound tightly with a towel for 10 minutes.
- You can treat minor, skin wounds at home, but go to the hospital if the cut is deep, bleeding heavily and/or the bleeding doesn’t stop after 10 minutes.
- After the wound stops bleeding, gently apply an anti-microbial cream to the wound.
- Note: If you feel that the wound is itchy or has a rash, stop applying the cream immediately.
- Bandage the wound.
- If you want to lie down, elevate your head by adding a few pillows to lie on.
- However, only take the medicine exactly as stated in the instructions for use, to avoid overdosing.
- If you still feel pain, see your doctor.
- Sudden severe pain and swelling in the face.
- Shortness of breath
- Fever, red or moist wound, these are signs of infection.
Reduce Lip Swelling with Natural Therapy
- After applying ice (see instructions above), apply aloe vera gel to the swollen lips.
- Apply aloe vera gel regularly throughout the day, if needed.
- Steep a packet of black tea and wait for it to cool.
- Soak a cotton ball in some tea and place it on the swollen lips for 10 to 15 minutes.
- You can repeat this several times a day for early results.
- Apply honey to your lips and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Then wash it off and apply a few more times a day.
- Combine turmeric with Fuller’s earth clay and water for a thick paste.
- Apply the mixture on your lips and let it dry.
- Then rinse with water and apply a few more times.
- Mix baking soda with water to get a thick paste.
- Apply the mixture on your lips and let it sit for a few minutes and then wash it off.
- Repeat this until the swelling is gone.
- Dissolve salt in warm water.
- Soak a cotton ball or towel in warm salt water and place it on your lips. If there is an open wound on your lips, you will feel a burning sensation but it will go away in a few seconds.
- Repeat this 1 or 2 times per day.
- Dissolve tea tree oil with another oil such as olive oil, coconut oil or aloe vera gel.
- Apply the mixture on your lips for 30 minutes and then wash it off.
- Apply the mixture a few more times if needed.
- Tea tree oil should not be used on young children.
