Try to identify the source of the feeling of worthlessness. Does a particular relationship make you feel useless? Feeling useless because of an uncontrollable situation? Do you feel useless because you can’t contribute to society the way you want? Identifying the cause is the first step in changing your life.

  • One way to explore that emotion is to keep a journal. Think about these questions as you write, trying to answer what’s troubling you.
  • Another way is to confide in a trusted friend. Sometimes talking about how you feel can help you spot problems.

Find passion. Identify strengths by exploring different interests and reading books. Look for things that make you happy and can contribute to society with the skills you have acquired. [1] X Research Source

  • One way to explore that interest is to take courses at a community college. These classes are relatively inexpensive, so you can spend a semester deciding what you’re passionate about. Many community colleges have evening and weekend classes if you have to work full-time.
  • There are also classes at your local library if you’re interested in art or history.
  • Another way to explore that hobby is to read books in your local library. The books here are free, and you can spend some time researching your interests.
  • If you want to meet new people with similar interests, search social networking sites like Meetup and Facebook to find people with similar interests near you.

Good work every day. Treat someone to coffee. Wear slippers for your lover without waiting for help. Give up parking to someone who looks stressed. The little things you do to help people make you feel useful. [2] X Research Source

Do volunteer work for the community. Volunteering is not only to help you feel useful, but also to help people. Pick a volunteer job you enjoy. If you enjoy reading, volunteer to work at the library. If you love children, join a children’s book at your local Christian Youth Association after school. [3] X Research Sources

Practice gratitude. Focus on the positive things in life. By focusing on the good things in life, you can overcome feelings of worthlessness and worthlessness. It unlocks the positive aspects of everything, giving you a happier perspective. [4] X Research Sources

  • Writing a gratitude journal will help you focus on the good things in life. Every day write down 5 things that make you grateful in life. Some people choose to use a social network like Facebook, posting a status every day about 5 things they are grateful for. Using social media can be the driving force behind this project, as you will get a lot of positive feedback from your friends.

Talk to yourself in a positive way. Sometimes feelings of worthlessness stem from low self-esteem. You may feel like you have nothing to contribute to the world. However, take some time each day to realize what you can do. You really mean something to everyone, and you need to realize that in yourself every day. [5] X Research Sources

  • One way to build self-esteem is to talk to yourself in the mirror. Every morning, look at your reflection, and say positive things about yourself out loud.
  • Stick positive affirmations on the fridge so you can see them every day. Write nice words like “I am a good, valuable person” or similar to boost self-esteem.

Accept compliments. As with positive self-talk, receive positivity from others, especially when they talk about what you do or who you are. You may find yourself unworthy of praise, but when it comes to taking the time to compliment you, people are usually sincere. Think about the contributions you have made to get the compliments you have today.

Dedication to the issues you care about. If you care about the conservation of natural resources, do something about it. Organize peaceful protests. Write letter. Conversation. Fighting for what you believe in can help you feel less worthless because you’re doing something good for your friends and country.

Stop procrastinating. Stay away from distractions like computers, TVs, phones, cats, or refrigerators. If you procrastinate, you will not achieve your goal. However, if you complete the tasks set out, you will definitely find yourself useful. Start with small things, like cooking for your lover, then work your way up to bigger things, like cleaning out the garage.

Take care of yourself. Develop confidence, value your time and skills more. You won’t be able to feel your life’s purpose if you don’t take better care of yourself. Do not take yourself lightly, but take time to rest and relax when needed.

  • One way to appreciate yourself is to say “no” to requests that you don’t have the time or energy to fulfill. If you take on too many things, you won’t be able to fully contribute to any one task.

Listen to everyone. Learn how to actively listen. It is paying attention to what others say instead of mentally preparing how to respond. Be interested in listening to the other person and respond to show that you are listening. [6] X Research Source

Praise what makes a person unique instead of insulting them. Instead of laughing at your boyfriend when they cry, let him know you appreciate his emotional honesty. Instead of laughing at him for his silly kitchen dance, join him in the dance. [8] X Research Sources

Get out of a toxic relationship. Some relationships won’t work out no matter how hard you try. If a person is emotionally abusive or just doesn’t want to spend time with you, it’s time to leave. You may feel yourself helpless in such a situation because it brings on a sense of failure. However, it’s just that you’re not right for the person, not because you’re not dedicated to the relationship. It’s possible that the other person has issues they face before getting serious in a relationship, so don’t blame yourself.

Facing a stressful situation

Do what you can. You may not be able to resolve the situation – your mother could still fall ill no matter what you do. However, you can stay with her. You can show up when needed. You can be supportive and encouraging. It may not solve the problem as you want it to, but you are still doing something that can reduce the feeling of worthlessness.

Take a moment to stop and breathe. You can pray, meditate, or just take a deep breath, whatever it is, take time to calm down. Accept that you cannot control the situation.

Check for signs of depression. Prolonged stress can lead to depression, and feelings of worthlessness can be a symptom of depression, especially when it is accompanied by other symptoms.

  • Symptoms of depression include difficulty concentrating, feeling negative, uninterested in things you used to enjoy doing, guilt, extreme fatigue, frequent melancholy, and even experiencing physical pain such as headache, stomachache. [11] X Research Source
  • Feeling sad every now and then doesn’t mean you’re depressed. Depression is a prolonged period of self-pity and sadness. When symptoms begin to take over your life, you fall into depression.

See your doctor if you suspect you are depressed. If you are depressed, you may need prescriptions, or counseling, to work through some of the problems, to help alleviate feelings of worthlessness. Remember, depression is not a sign of weakness. It can be due to a traumatic life event, but it can also be a chemical imbalance that needs to be corrected. In addition, certain medications, genetics, and other problems such as illness can also lead to depression. [12] X Research Source
