Drink enough water. As with any illness, drinking enough water is the first line of defense against a cough. If you have a cough because of a dry throat, you may just need some water. Even if the cough is due to any cause, it is always good to drink plenty of water. [1] X Research Source

  • If your throat is sore or burning from coughing, avoid drinks that can cause further irritation, such as acidic drinks like orange juice.
  • You also need to be careful with milk. While the myth that milk produces more mucus is a myth, milk — especially whole milk — can stick to your throat and make you feel like you have more phlegm. However, if your cough is caused by irritation or dryness of the throat, cold dairy products can help soothe the cough. • If you are unsure, you should always drink water.

Warm the drink. For certain coughs, like those caused by a stuffy hat or runny nose, warm water can be even more effective than cold or room-temperature water.

  • Whether it’s your favorite herbal tea with honey or just hot lemonade, according to the American Lung Association’s chief medical officer, “any warm drink can thin mucus in the airways.” ” . [4] X Research Sources

Try salt water. Especially in the case of a cold- or flu-related cough, salt water is your best friend.

  • Gargling with salt water or using a saline nasal spray can kill the virus or bacteria that cause the runny nose that causes you to cough, and help relieve coughing by clearing mucus out of your throat.

Consider using steam — in some cases. It is common knowledge that steam from a shower or humidifier can help with a cough; however, just in case you have a cough due to dry air.

Sit up straight. The horizontal position can cause mucus to drain into the throat.

  • For example, when you have a cough, you should use a pillow to raise your head to prevent the nasal discharge in the sinuses from running down the throat causing coughing. [6] X Research Sources

Clean the air. Stay away from dirty air, including cigarette smoke. [7] X Research Sources Airborne dust particles can be the cause of a cough or a cough that is aggravated by other causes.

Keep the atmosphere quiet. Avoid wind, ceiling fans, heaters, and air conditioners as moving air can make a cough worse. [9] X Research Source

Try breathing exercises. While most breathing exercises are for people with chronic conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, they can be applied to anyone who is suffering from a cough.

  • You can try “controlled coughing” or “puffed-lip breathing,” among other measures. For example, with pursed-lip breathing you can take a deep breath through your nose and count to two. Then, while pursed your lips as you were about to whistle, breathe slowly and count to four. [10] X Research Source[11] X Cleveland Clinic Trusted Source Go to Source

Use medicine. If your cough persists, consider trying cough suppressants.

  • Cough medicines usually consist of two ingredients: an expectorant that helps reduce mucus, and an inhibitor that blocks the cough reflex. Check the label to choose the most effective medicine for your cough. [12] X Research Source
  • Your doctor may prescribe a cough syrup containing codeine, which is a very effective cough suppressant. Be sure to follow exactly the dosing instructions your doctor prescribes, as codeine has the potential to be addictive.

Soothes the throat. Consider sucking on cough lozenges, eating frozen foods (such as popsicles), or gargling with salt water to soothe your throat if your cough is causing inflammation. [13] X Research Source

  • Many cough medicines contain a mild anesthetic that reduces the cough reflex. Likewise, cold foods, such as popsicles, are thought to temporarily numb the throat. [14] X Research Source

Try mint products. Whether in lozenges, ointments, or sprays, menthol has been shown to relieve coughs. [15] X Research Source[16] X Research Source
